You're absolutely right. They don't need help. They do a great job - and they are the ones paying the bills so they can do as they see fit.
Gilly's pining for the old days. That is ok too, when it is tempered with a dose of current-day reality - which his reply was. He wasn't saying that they are going to get 45 cars, and 20 invaders.
His point was if they DID want to get a few invaders, how would you go about it. He was giving an example of what worked previously.
Hotel rooms in the summer? I agree, that is a near impossible task. But, you are taking that one aspect of his response in a completely literal sense. Instead - look at it as figuratively - what would it take to get an invader to come? (Likely nothing, given his other point, that no tracks take off that weekend) But if you called some drivers, starting with ones who already have made trips there, what little items would sway their decision? Is it a pit pass? A free tire? 6 wawa subs?
Would it move the needle in public relations and fan count? Maybe not, maybe the juice isn't worth the proverbial squeeze. That doesn't mean that it can't be discussed respectfully.
The good thing - that while we can all choose to disagree on this front, we all are passionate about the track.
