Dad took me to my first race back in 1966. We sat in the smaller fourth turn stands on the hill at Nazareth Speedway. I only remember two things from that race. One, was that it was dusty and I only remember barely seeing one car driving through all the dust and that car was driven by Rags Carter. He was driving the Cope number one coupe and Rags won that night. The only other thing I remember from that night was that I was looking at the stuff at the novelty stand and I saw a racing magazine. It was filled with a ton of pictures. Dad never had any extra money to waste, so I figured that if I asked him to buy me that magazine, he'd say no. But to my surprise that night, he said okay to the purchase. So, he bought me my first racing magazine--a Cavalcade of Auto Racing. Man, I cherished that thing. I still have it. I paged through that magazine hundreds of times as a kid, dreaming of going to those other tracks shown in that book. Since I took it to school a lot, I see that I used my then newly acquired Dymo Label Maker gun and I put my name on the cover, in case it got lost or "borrowed" (and never returned) at school. As you can see, I also doodled on the cover, most likely during one of those boring days in school, while I was daydreaming of the races during class. I had to laugh now seeing how I spelled Frankie Schneider. I guess I spelled it like I incorrectly pronounced it back then--Schin..ieder. . I wrote Rags and Whip on the old cover, too. Those two racers were my favorite drivers early on and I think that was mostly because they had catchy nicknames and the fact that I saw Rags win at my first race.
That day at the track with Dad was where all this racing stuff started for me. While looking at my racing magazine back in 1966, there were zero thoughts in my head that someday I'd have pictures published in racing magazines.
Thanks Dad for taking me to my first race and allowing me to buy that Cavalcade magazine that night. What a treasure. I think I'll go flip through it one more time now.
