One week from today will be our 15th year anniversary... We launched 3 Wide's Picture Vault on November 13th 2002. It's amazing that we're still here (who would have thought it...) and even more amazing is that I know that there are some folks still reading this right now who have been with us just about from the very beginning!
The site is a time sponge for sure, but it's also a lot of fun... We tapped into something that we all miss... Flemington... Reading... Nazareth.... East Windsor.... Langhorne.... Trenton.... Harmony... In an article a few years ago, John Donnelly from Hemmings Motor News referred to it as "Our Virtual Speedway from the Past."
I hope we've provided hours of enjoyment for those of you that we affectionately refer to as "The Vault Community." I also hope that as a group, we've recognized and shown our appreciation to all of the folks for their "part in the show" that we can't stop talking about... 40... 50... and even 60 years later! I am grateful that so many other folks out there felt the same passion to not let those great days at the speedway fade into the past without at least a little bit of a fight!
The other thing that I am grateful for is the very important role that you, "The Vault Community" have played in supporting the Matheny Christmas Party for the past 10+ years.
Once a year, I ask all of you who enjoy visiting this site to take a minute and help us support the great folks from the local racing community who continue the great tradition of bringing Christmas to the kids at the Matheny School.
This year’s Christmas Party is set for Saturday December 16th, and while that seems like a long way off, there’s a lot to be done by the volunteers who put everything in motion, including getting the list that will have the items requested by the students, and then “helping” Santa be able to check off as many of those items as we can.
All of the legwork is done by Kevin, his family, and his great team of volunteers. Where we, (us old guys here in The Vault ) can really help, is by providing our support via gift cards, PayPal, or by sending a check to make sure that Santa can get everything on the list. (The elves in the workshop can only do so much… Santa usually has to make a few stops to Best Buy, Walmart, Target, etc., to button everything up!)
We try not to ask for a lot throughout the year. We try not to beat you guys up by continuously asking to buy stuff (3 Wide trinkets & doodads) as a way of supporting the site(s.) We don’t have a membership fee like most other groups…. We just want you to enjoy your visits here and to the main site, whether you post, or prefer just to read what others post…. And once a year, (for those 52 weeks of enjoyment hopefully!) we ask that you to show your support for our site, by supporting the Matheny Christmas Party.
We've got a loyal group here (thank you for that guys... really.. thank you) but we also know that a lot of folks split their time between our site, other sites, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and other places that compete for folks “on-line time.” I am very grateful to have a solid core group here. However, with so many on-line places to go, I’m really hoping that if you're reading this, and if you enjoy whatever it is that we do here year round, you’ll take a look near the bottom of this post and see how easy it is to support the Christmas Party.
As I’ve said before, I really don’t like to ask you guys for anything. It’s not comfortable for me to do, but the exception that I make is that I do ask that all of us find a way to help bring that special day of joy to those who deserve it the most.
You guys know the history… You know the connection between the local racing community and the very special school located up in Peapack NJ… The school/care facility that Sammy Beavers visited as a child, and who had such a powerful experience, that he never forgot the kids… And years later, when he was able to, he moved others in the local racing community such as Ace Lane Jr, Mike Grbac, Ken Kulhman to action, to also help support the school. That was the beginning of the involvement of the local racing community with The Matheny School. We are all grateful for what Sammy and that initial group did.
As mentioned above, good friend of The Vault Kevin Eyres and his family, along with a dedicated group of volunteers do all the behind the scenes legwork to make sure each year they deliver on the local racing community's promise, to have a Christmas Party that is all about given some moments of joy, to those who need it the most.
So.... If you’ve ever wondered what it costs to keep the site(s) up and running… or ever wondered about how much time goes into keeping the wheels turning around here…, worry no more… Show your support to this year’s party by using one of the methods outlined below, and “We’ll call it even!”
I hope you will join me in supporting this year's Matheny Christmas Party, to be held on Saturday December 16th, by helping out in any way that you can... $5, $10, $20..... Maybe an amount that represents a favorite car #...Maybe a $ for every year you've been visiting our site!... Maybe a gift card to Best Buy, Walmart , Target or possibly a Visa gift card that can be used to purchase gifts where needed... Whatever you can do to help this year's effort will be greatly appreciated!
