If I remember correctly, that year you had to make a mandatory pit stop. Around lap 150 a yellow came out and the majority of the field came to the pits, including Hager. I don't rmember what spot Hager was running in at the time but it was near the tail end of the field.
As everyone came to take fuel and tires, I remember watching him blow through the pits at nearly full race speed never stopping thus passing everyone. Once he got back on the track in turn 2 he sped up even more, to full race speed, to catch the pace car by which time was comming pass the flaggers stand on the front stretch. Once all the cars in the pits were finished fueling they started to move towards the pit exit ove on turn 2. By that time the pace car and Hager had gone by. thus putting most every car a lap down.
I'm not sure if Hager planned on running the whole race on one tank of gas, or perhaps he had come to the pits earlier and got a splash and dash, and everyone missed it. All I remember is watching Hager blaze through the pits while everyone else was sitting there taking fuel and tires. It's a miracle nobody got hurt in that deal.
At least this is how my 56 year old brain remembers it. I may have some of the the story mixed up. But I can say this nobody, ever went through the pits faster than Hager did that day! LOL!
