Hey Roger.... By the looks of things they could have asked him "what section" he wanted.... and then gave him the entire section.
I see Daytona is still playing games where if you want to sit by the start finish line for the 500, you have to buy "multi-day packages." They started this in the late 90's/early 2000's(?) when folks were having trouble getting tickets to the 500. They forced all of us long term ticket holders for Campbell (start/finish line section) to buy multi day packages if we wanted to sit where we had been sitting for 20+ years.
The first year or two we played the game.... Ended up with extra seats for Saturday's race because we had to buy them to stay in Campbell, but not all of our group wanted to go on Saturday. Ended up selling them for 1/2 price or less. It eventually got to where you couldn't even give away Saturday tickets because everyone was trying to sell theirs too.
The sad thing is that there will be people having that same experience this year.... thinking that they'll be able to sell their Saturday tickets and break even/not lose too much. They'll find out how hard it is to sell a Saturday ticket when they get down there and see hundreds of folks lined up with the same sad look on their face realizing that they're spending part of their vacation trying to sell tickets to a race that they never really planned on going to.
That became the final straw for me. After going to speedweeks for 38 straight years, I've never gone back.
