It has been great to read these reponses.  Ironically I was at a lot of the races mentioned here, including most of the Flemington races, 76's, and the Race Of Champions that Pauch won.  It is enlightening to read the perspectives of others.  I had to pick one (or two), but all the rest get honorable mentions in my book.  I used to sit in the open grandstands on the 4th corner at Flemington, but those tickets were sold out for the ROC race.  I had to sit between the 1st and 2nd corners so I am sure I missed a lot of the drama.  I saw it happen but I was too far away to really appreciate it.  Billy Pauch was (is) an amazing race car driver, and a nice man.  Kids have radar and they all flock to the Pauch family.

I want to mention one other moment, and it might fall under the "most dramatic moment".  Kenny Gill was mentioned in an earlier thread about handicapped people and racing.  Kenny Gill won one sportsman feature event at Flemington.  It is unfortunate that the tradition of the winner circling the track with the checkered flag is gone - but that night Harry Dee gave Kenny the checkered flag, and Kenny started a slow circuit.  Once again Bill Singer was at his  best with just a few words.  He said, "Kenny cannot hear you so wave a program, a hat, anything you have".  So as Kenny rumbled around the track it was dead silent except for the sound of his motor and 5,000 people waving hats.  I don't think there was a dry eye in the joint.
