Today I made my way up to Holy Saviour Cemetery in Bethlehem PA for my month of May visit to the final resting place of Eddie Sachs.  Next to his gravestone I was pleased to find both a fresh checkered flag honoring his racing achievements and a fresh American flag honoring his service in World War II.  I cleaned up some grass clippings on his gravestone and then stood back and reflected on what I’ve come to know about Eddie’s life here in the Lehigh Valley, his storied racing career, and the events of May 30, 1964.  As both Jack and Kevin have mentioned during their previous visits here, I could feel the history while standing at that place.  I’m humbled to be able to visit his grave a few times a year, clean the grass and leaves from around his gravestone, and be sure a fresh checkered flag is waving in the breeze.  RIP Eddie Sachs.  I’ll especially remember you during the playing of “Back Home Again in Indiana” on this year’s race day, May 27.
