My 1st start as a driver was at Wall Stadium in 1962 in a freshly build car. While I was not delusional enough to expect a win right off the bat I did expect to be somewhat competitive. (WRONG) Putting last minute finishing touches on the car prevented us from getting there in time for the warm ups.
Being the new guy I started scratch. Coming off the 4th turn with the hammer down and Pete LaVance waving the green I was stunned to see the pack growing smaller as they left me in the dust. By the 3rd or 4th lap I pulled the ill handling car to the infield to avoid the embarrassment of being lapped by the field before halfway. I realized then that it was going to take more than determination and cojones to be a front runner!
