John, I saw your message. Truer words have never been spoken. To be honest with you John you hit a major nerve with me ! Lol ! Todays young racers would have alot more success if they knew anything about the race car and worked on and repaired it each week.Your father was old school as id my dad and you and your brother knew the deal if you wanted to race. My dad taught me and I also took the time to teach my son Austin. There is nothing that you and I can not or have not done when it comes to the race car and anything that goes along with it. I would bet you could tell some funny stories about some of the things you see and hear during when doing the race tech. Same goes with that the best tech guys are the ones that once raced.
It is hard to BS a guy that knows all of the tricks. Down here there a guys that are making a boat load of money baby sitting and running a day care at the race track. The Bandolaros and Legend cars and now asphalt late models are the main cash cows. This goes on year round. Renting cars etc to all of the little Tommy,s and miss Tina,s and mom and dad paying the freight. Money at times is not the problem. The problem is the kids have clue about anything that has to do with the race car.
I have been asked a million times to take care of these kids race cars and do not do it. I do not have the the desire to do it. Mainly because I have seen many times where the kid gets out of the race car and can not tell you a thing about what just happened. Than they rush off to the air conditioned totor home and play video games or play on their cell phones. Than you have to give them a wake up call to when their next race is. And at times you have to deal with the parent because they think their kid is the next Jeff Gordon.
No matter what the best race car drivers has always and still is the guy or gal that gets out of the car and can work on it. Today there are so many things on You Tube that can help get a head start on the other guy or gal you are racing with.Plus every weekend over the winter someone is having a class at their shop on what to do with the race car. Donny Kreitz has one even has Freddie or Lance there to give driving tips. All of the folks that have these deals KNOW what is going on. This is also a way to help understand your race car.
When we were growing up every gas station had a race car. Every body shop and some one that lived around you had a race car. It was a no brainer. You would learn something about racing or if didnt you would get run off. If you wanted to help and learn. Sky was the limit. Today there are so many teams that have the money to race but quit because they can not find any help on the race team. It is crazy down here. We have the NASCAR school and these kids graduate and want to be a crew chief right away. They not only do not know the basics or own any tools and never raced a day in their lives. I do see some kids coming up that know the deal but most do not get it. That is so refreshing to see.
I will and have aways taken the time to teach anyone that wants to learn if they ask. I can go on for ever but this next generation could reach their dreams if they take time to help themselves. You have to want it more than the other guy. No matter what job you are doing. Most of us know that. It is funny most of our superstars of the future are close to 60 years old. Somebody has got to replace Hearn, Pauch, Horton etc. Now is the time for little Tommy or Miss Tina to understand that and get your butt in gear and get your hands dirty and get in the race shop. Attend a chassis builder class or get a Behrents catolog and learn these parts on a race car. Ask an old guy, make us feel good and pick our brain. We will not steer you wrong. I wish I could spend some time with Sonny Dornberger, Kenny Weld,Gus on Geralds 76 car or any of the ol guys in Gasoline alley in Paterson. Heck probley the best ever Davey Brown Sr. he will give you some tips.
We have been doing this quite a while and still do not know everything. The stuff that works today is out to lunch next week. Change with the times or get left behind. I see it everyday down here in the deep south. It is everywhere. No matter the task at hand.
John and others sorry for running my chops so long.Lol . I said you struck a nerve. Now get to work kids! Make us proud.
