Ross Chastain winning last night at Kansas is a big story, but I'm wondering if the storyline of Stew Friesen not winning, after dominating so much of the race, might be an even bigger story...
I'd rather have seen him get the win, but I think the big storyline coming out of Kansas will be that Stew was in position to win... drove an amazing race... was leading/up front all night....but once again, came away without the win, and as a result, there will be folks that watch the races as casual fans... and those that are in the Nascar circles, that will be noticing Stew even with more attention going forward.
Being a Stew fan, it's not easy to say, but him having another one get away, just adds to what was already a building legitimate storyline.
One thing that all forms of automobile racing have in common is that nobody cares if they don't know who is behind the wheel of at least one of the cars/trucks that is competiting.... We need to have some kind of a connection with a driver, whether in person... whether from seeing them interviewed on TV, or from being made aware of them through media/other. Because of that, we may want them to do well.... or in some cases, maybe not so well.... If we don't have that connection... then we don't have the interest, and at that point, it's just a bunch of metal (or carbon fiber in some cases now....) objects going round and round...
Not winning at Kansas last night will have more folks talking... and paying attention to Stew... which is good for the sport, and in a strange way, could be a positive for his career.... And when Stew does get that first win, it'll make it all that more impactful to those who have been following his racing career for a while, and also for those who are just now getting on board with the story.
(Probably right about now, Kevin and those who know Stew are calling "BS"... and saying, "I'd rather have the win!.... But will see how it plays out.... Folks will want to tune in again next week which can't be a bad thing for Stew... for Halmar... and for The Gander Mountain Truck series....)
