Flemington New Jersey
Tuesday, July 21, 1970
Grand American race of 1970 was held at the Flemington Fairgrounds Speedway a square shaped mile dirt surface with the corners rounded. It was the fourth of a 5 event STP Northern Tour after a 340 mile trip from Loudon on Sunday. Starting line ups were determined by qualifying heats won by Tiny Lund and Jim Paschal.
Tiny Lund led the first 16 laps while most drivers struggled with mud covering their windshields before yielding to Paschal who stayed out front until lap 51 when he was caught up in a wreck that injured two drivers. The NASCAR Newsletter race result list Stan Starr Sr. was driving the Camaro but news reports of the accident list Stan Starr Jr. as the driver. The Camaro spun out in 3 and 4 and was hit head on by Ken Rush running wide open. Both drivers were hospitalized in serious condition with Starr suffering a broken leg and Rush loosing 12 teeth while breaking his sternum and jaw. Paschal was able to pit under the caution and repair the damage to his Javelin enough to continue. Tom Cox was also involved but was able to continue until a later wreck side lined him that involved Starrs other Camaro driven by Tom Tiller. After the wreck Lund would move into the lead and hold it the rest of the way to record his 15 thwin of 1970 with Jim Paschal close behind in second.
Lund earned $1,400 of the $9,030 purse. Of note on the purses for the Tour events was how the funds were distributed. The payout did not drop off as fast as you went down the order. No finisher got less than $200.
Twenty four cars took the green and 10 were running at the finish. There were 3 cautions for 26 laps.
