Kevin-  I have my own experience in that area.  Back in the early 70s, I helped push Joseph Kelly, a sportsman racer at Flemington, after his motor stalled on a pit stop for a flat.   When the car fired, I was sent flying in the gravel and torn up my knee.  Chic Ronan, who I was in helping in the pits, saw my knee and ordered me to the ambulance.  They took to the hospital on Rt. 31 north, a mile or so north of the speedway.  After the ER worked on my knee and cut me loose, they told me to call for a ride back to the speedway.  Since this was pre cell phones, I walked back to the track.  Maybe its a little more than a mile or so from the track.  Learned my lesson, let go a little earlier next time!
