Paintman, not picking on your example but, the finish of the 72 or most finishes before 1980 or so, looked like this https://www.racing-reference.info/race/1972_Daytona_500/W . Look at finishes to all the races such as the ROC at Pocono or Lanhorne Opens, they all look like this. Second on down are all laps down. That's really not good competition.
