Coastal 181 Releases New Book on New York Racing Legend Lou Lazzaro

Newburyport, Mass., April 24, 2023 — Motorsports publisher Coastal 181 announced today the upcoming release of its latest title, “LAZZARO: The Man and His Machines,” the star-crossed story of the late Lou Lazzaro, champion racer from Utica, New York.

Written by award-winning Central New York sports journalist Ron Moshier, who covered Lazzaro for decades and inducted him posthumously into the Greater Utica Sports Hall of Fame, the
book traces Lazzaro’s legendary career from its modest beginnings as a teenager in the 1950s to his winning ways on dirt and asphalt, and finally to an emotionally charged farewell at Fonda Speedway, the fairgrounds oval dubbed the “Track of Champions.”

Lazzaro was a track champion at Fonda, Vernon’s Utica-Rome Speedway, the old Victoria Speedway in Dunnsville and Malta’s Albany-Saratoga Speedway. He won 251 Sportsman and Modified features at 21 different tracks in the Northeast, Canada and Florida. Nicknamed “The Monk,” Lazzaro was 64 years old when he recorded the last of his 113 Fonda wins in 1999. He died on May 1, 2000, a few days after falling ill and dropping out of the Fonda feature.

Moshier, a Richfield Springs native now living in Whitesboro, New York, worked for over 30 years as a sports writer and later sports editor at Utica’s Observer-Dispatch. He also covered Modified stock car racing for Area Auto Racing News and was a columnist for Trackside magazine.

Available for shipping May 8, “LAZZARO: The Man and His Machines” will be formally launched at Fonda Speedway on June 10, with author Moshier and Lazzaro family members on hand to autograph copies. A book-signing event will also take place at Utica-Rome Speedway on June 23. Signing dates at other tracks will be announced later in the racing season.

The book is priced at $24.95 through May 31 (regular price $29.95) and can be ordered online at www.coastal181.com  or by calling Coastal 181 at 877-907-8181 toll free. The website, updated daily, includes over 1500 other motorsports books and DVDs, as well as hundreds of photos and racing commentaries.
