Donnie Wetmore Gets His Page on ARRA Website

Ringoes,NJ – The Auto Racing Research Associates auto racing statistical website continues to grow by leaps and bounds with still another addition of a well known Northeast dirt track shoe from the past! Former Weedsport, NY resident...Donnie Wetmore, the terror of the small block world back in the 70’s through the ‘90’s on the highly competitive “Outlaw Small Block” circuit comprised of the Brewerton, Fulton and Utica-Rome Speedways in central New York, made his mark with his racing career and went on to become a member of the Richard Petty Driving Experiece team down South.

Donnie’s research has been one that I have had on the back burner for upwards of a year.” mentioned ARRA President Fred Voorhees when asked about why Donnie Wetmore? “Honestly, there is no rhyme or reason as to who gets researched or not. It happens lots of ways. Some drivers have their records kept for them. If I hear about it...I inquire as to obtaining them and making a page for the driver. Some drivers submit the stats themselves. Some drivers with great histories retire and they get considered. There have been files of tracks or drivers that I simply stumble over while hunting around the internet.” Fred revealed. “And honestly...I’m not all that certain of just how I came across the idea of researching Donnie Wetmore’s career, but I will tell you this...his page is well deserved!”

Donnie Wetmore competed back when our local racing in the Northeast was just beginning to get dependable, weekly coverage of the racing events. Tracks were just beginning to understand the need for weekly press releases detailing their shows and the results. “This is something that every auto racing historian will tell you,” Voorhees admitted, “….that we are absolutely limited in what we can find by what is out there. It’s as simple as that. These days...our sport gets such complete coverage...its no problem to look back at todays papers and internet sources and get the results for each and every week. However, back in the 70’s….racing coverage...even in auto racing publications...just wasn’t 100% and consistant. It’s the bane of us historians.” relented Fred.

To that end, ARRA has confirmed all but three of Wetmore’s supposed wins. Two at Brewerton and one at Fulton. ARRA asks that if any racing fans have any information on these three or any other wins that Donnie Wetmore may have from the past...they urge you to contact them so that his records can be updated accordingly.
