I'm not 'hating on anyone over this one... but my question is, how does it make for a better show?

If it doesn't add something positive to the show, then it doesn't need to be part of the show.  

Having a flagger give signals regarding the size of the lead to the leader could alter the outcome of the event if a leader is pushing harder than he maybe should be, or if a leader is easing up more than they should, and that should be determined by the driver inside the car, never by the flagger.
