Great stuff Joe!  Sure, I remember that car ... it is Bob Harrop and I saw it run many times including the overall win at the very first Super Stock Nationals on Aug. 7, 1965 at York, PA.  That event has come to be known as "The Woodstock of Drag Racing" because of the overflow amount of early funny cars and F/X cars, as well as fans turned out for a one day/night event.  It was one wild drag meet.

Bob Harrop was a very strong runner in the early Super Stock-Funny Car wars.  The altered wheelbase Dodge was one of a few factory built drag cars that helped change the face of drag racing.  Harrop is still around and in fact, this past weekend he was at the Latimore Fairgrounds-EMMR museum as part of the York, PA Heritage Days events.  Also in attendance was Al Joniec, south Jersey Ford drag racer and the late Dave Strickler's family in honor of Strickler.

Thanks for sharing the pictures ... any more early sixties S/S-F/X drag pics?  Here's artwork of Harrop's car that I did a number of years ago.

Joel

That was the greatest drag race I ever attended. I was there from 1o am Saturday until 2:30 am Sunday. Phil Bonner in the Daddy Warbucks Nustang won every race he was in but had to leave before the finals to make a contracted match race elsewhere. Bee On Video has a DVD of that meet.

My brother and I were there as well ... we saw the final run between Harrop and Bud Faubel from the top end of the track.  We went up there to be closer to our car when the last run went down.  We heard them lining up and watched the final run from the edge of the track near the finish line.  Stupid on our part but it is one hell of a memory!

Been hooked on those cars ever since.

Cool picture, Injected Hemi,Dodge hauler in background and I believe a Tiopet sticker on front fender. The picture drawn by Joel, with the car launching with the left wheel lifted is spot on.

Thanks Jack.  My art is the early version of Harrop's '65 car before the injection.  Harrop was a South Jersey guy, thus the Tiopet was a natural.

Bob's car was listed on Tiona sales literature along with several stock car drivers, Elton Hildreth, PeeWee Griffin and others. How many of you remember Leon Manchester running the Hemi at Nazareth?  I recall Bob "Horse Trading" with Leon in exchange for welding work done by Leon on Bob's trailer.I hope someone else can help varify that for me.  Great stuff,

That was Sam Auxier from the MD area with the Mustang.  That was a big winner on the short-lived NASCAR Ultra Stock drag circuit back then.  That car is alive and restored.

Ahh... the good old days. There were hundreds of those A/FX cars of all brands back in the late 60's and early 70's.  Now, your lucky to get 16 funny's at a national event..... 16 cookie cutter cars. I liked the wheels up rosen burnouts a lot more than the now water burnouts.

Yes, like much of racing ... those years were very good back then.  Lots of variety and ideas on how to do it.  The rosin burnout, brand loyalty, 4-speed vs automatic, match race ritual sure was exciting at night on a small drag strip!

Great thread, thanks Joe for kicking it off and to all who commented!

You see what the Southeast Gassers are doing? '67 period correct, straight axle, 4 speed only. They seem to be growing quickly, and I can understand why after seeing some of their highlight videos.

Yes!  Thanks!  I've been watching the Southeastern Gasser group for awhile now ... they are ... in my opinion ... the best nostalgia/vintage drag group out there.  No handicap-dial-in start stuff and all vintage setups AND no automatic transmissions!  Great variety too.  They are really doing it like it used to be, not just playing the role.  Terrific stuff.

Joel.
