I walked around my favorite race track, Nazareth National Speedway, many times after it died in late 1971. I loved that place and it hurt to see it gone. I always hoped that it would open again and it finally did in December 1982. This bottom view is of the super long backstretch in 1974. The top view shows it in 1982, right before rebuilding started. The backstretch was then shortened, when the track was converted from a mile and an eight, to a mile. This second version (1982) of the track only lasted a few years.

Thanks for posting those Jack- it's really a cool perspective comparing the 2 time frames.  Looking at it, I'm having a brain phart.  I remember getting a pit pass in 1966 when it first opened up and going on the back stretch to watch the cars blast past us going about 140 mph.  We were probably about 30 to 50 feet away from the track and I don't remember an inside fence or anything blocking us from standing next to the track.  Was there an inside fence then?  Since I'm a rather old adult now, I have been punishing myself for 51 years of how stupid I was.

I don't know when the inside wall was installed on the backstretch. My first time at that track was in 1968 and I was always in the stands and I couldn't see that far away. That 1966 race that you were at must have been the opener and maybe some of the inside wall and other things weren't built yet, because they tried to get an event in before the end of the year. I just don't know. Kind of just like what happened there in 1982 when they opened in December. Maybe that inside wall was added the next year after Whip Mulligan crashed down into the tunnel on opening day in '66.

When Whip crashed the H&H 14 into the tunnel (actually "fell" into the tunnel) did it not cost Whip the Nazareth point championship that year?

My father owned a modified that raced at the little track. During intermission I would walk up to the big track and check out the progress as they were building it.

Now as of the inside wall. In either 67 or 68 my father's driver Blane Saddler Sr. was coming down the back stretch (as pictured) and got hit with a rock in the eye.  He pulled over into the infield and sat until finally someone came over to him.  They thought the car just stalled.

The big track did have 3 lives. It was built in 1966, reborn in 1982 and then reborn in 1987.

I think the inside wall had to be installed before USAC would run there .
