Question regarding this pic. The third time I looked at it ( yeah, it's that good ) I saw that there is a piece of tire on guard rail post. Was this done for safety ? |

It looks like the only damage was the pony wheel. Too bad the crew could not run over there with a jack and a spare. Was this the wreck that the 666 had the roll cage sheared off? |

No. I think that was 1978 this was the year Jack Johnson won.It looks like Lou is wondering when a wrecker is going to clean this mess up so he get to the pits and change the pony tire. The picture doesn't show the rear of the car. |

The harness horses used to race on the inner cinder track. The rubber pieces on the fence posts were for safety for the horses and jockeys. I think there was a tote board at the start/finish line. |

Great Photo of Lou..I dont remember him smiling much anyway...The date of the big one was spring of 1978 I thought.. we got rained out in 1977 and came back in March 1978 and it was snowing before the race. i think it was cancelled for another week and the track tore up and rutted everywhere and I broke front suspension and spun and backed into the inside guard rail and flipped over one time..Then all H^*L broke loose..The Big One..Yup I was the first on on the scene for that one...HtH |

Howie...Correct..the big one where you flipped was in the spring of 1978, but it happened on April 15, 1978, not in March. The main reason I can always remember the date of Wayne Reutimann's crash was because it happened on Saturday April 15 and I got hurt at Flemington on the following Saturday. I felt so bad for Wayne that day--I thought he was dead or hurt really bad when I first walked up to his cageless car. The ironic part of feeling that way was that the following Saturday, I was the one that was almost dead and hurt badly. |
