I spotted a picture (link below) of the Lane Ford #29 driven by Rodney Nolf, Sr. (a.k.a. Zorro Engler).  I think there is a color photo somewhere in the Vault also.  Can anyone tell me what motor was used in this car?  One source said he had only one win in this car.  Another source said he had a sportsman championship.  Probably won his championship in a different car.  Can anyone fill in any details?

Thanks in advance.     Ray

I remember this car as a Sportsman (Novice) at Nazereth in the mid to late 60's. At that time it was powered by a Y Block Ford. (292 or 312).

I never knew Rod had a "secret idenity". I've heard of Zorro Engler, but didn't know it was an alias. He has a machine shop in Belfast Pa. Belfast Automotive.

That must be his son. Rod Nolf and Belfast Automotive built engines for Gary Butler's LM back in the day.

Thans for the responses.  Still a question as to whether this was a modified with a 427 Ford or a sportsman with a Ford Y block.  Below is an article I spotted on the net.  Will this clarify or can someone else answer the engine question?  Sorry about the size - maybe Jow can fix it.

If I remember correctly Zorro started up front of a loaded field.  Yes he held off the entire modified world that night.  After that night I started painting my slot cars the same metallic blue as he had on the sedan.

The sportman car had a flat back, the modified was a chevy hump back body not sure of the year anymore. Our family and the Varga's were good friends and my older brother Gary would take me to there shop once in awhile to watch the modified being built. At 12 years old it pegged my cool meter and hooked me on racing to this day Something else that was neat, the motor that was in that chevy hump back a inline six was given to my brother Gary. It then found its way into an avery tractor we had at the farm. Used the chevy three speed coupled to the tractor trans. The thing would go 40 MPH and could wheelie anytime you wanted man was that thing fun. Back to the question 427 ford injected

I got hooked on racing for many of the same reasons that everyone did.  But as a kid the cool names and nick-names, real or made up added to the atmosphere.  Zorro, Two-Gun, Red Coffin, the Mayor of Upper Black Eddy ("is he really the mayor, Pop?") and so on.  Very cool time.  If our home-boy Fuzzy Van Horn was not running, I would pull for the guy with the cool name.
