Isn't that the legendary Kevin Eyres in the "Avis 2" hot rod in the 3rd photo from the top? Always heard that Kevin always "tried harder".  Scott Ely

Yes, legend, NO.  1984 Sportsman.  The division lasted another year and was cancelled after about six races into 1985. The Modifieds wanted more money, so the tracks answer was, get rid of the Sportsmans and give that money to the Mods.  It was a time where you had "store bought" cars and the homebuilts were just fazing out.  Fun class with a 318 cid engine. Bought or recieved used tires from the Modifieds. The cars were fast and just a tic slower than the Mods. Ended up moving up to the Mods with my 307 Chevy and hung on for dear life! Thank goodness for guys like Gil Hearne who liked to teach young guys like me on "how WE race".

A lot of fun. Simpler times. The transition was tough, but racing in front of the big 80's race crowd was fun! It was amazing to look up in the grandstands and see that many people. They were there to see Gil Hearne, Tony Siscone, and Charlie Kremerz, but we were there!

Guys like me called Troyer.  lol  At the time I could'nt build much, but knew how to meet the people that did. I learned alot and have remained friends with many of them to this day.
