A sad day 43 years ago yesterday (November 29, 1978), when Mike Grbac passed away from his injuries from his crash at Reading one month earlier.

(Speaking of 43, Mike is shown here at Nazareth Speedway in the Jim Horton 43 in 1972.)

I was in 8th grade and still recall the accident very vividly.

The day we lost Mike Grbac was indeed a sad, sad day.  He was gifted with great racing talent as well as a tremendous personiality.  Tough to dislike him.  Didn't this Horton hot rod become Jimmy's first ride (as a sportsman).  Scott Ely

From what I recall, Jimmy and Jim Horton told me at a FSHS years ago that Jimmy's first sportsman race car was from the remains of the black Horton #43 coupe that was crashed. That car, to me, looks pretty much the same as the blue 43 coupe. But, since the Hortons mentioned that it was from the black coupe, I guess the blue coupe was a different chassis.

A very sad day indeed. After learning what happened to my friend and fellow racer Mike l added X bars in the top of the roll cages of my cars. Another sad reminder what has to happen to make our cars safer.

Was there that day as a crew member on the Carberry 99.  One of the worst days of my racing life. Hard to believe it's been so long. RIP Mike.  You are missed
