Hey Kev   The speed shop was on West Broadway in Manhattan. The owner's name was Joe but I don't recall his last name. Whitey worked anti crime in that area - they could use a couple of Whiteys on the job up there right now

Manhatten seems like an unusual place for a speed shop. Was it like a California Speed and Sport that handled street and oval track stuff? Great memories seeing the picture of you, Glen, his Dad Ted and I think the other guy was named Steve.

Hi Mark - hope all is well.

I was only there a couple of times but as I recall it was a pretty big store and they had a lot of drag race and street car soup up stuff. The 4 cylinder import hot rods were just starting to become popular and Joe actually opened a drag strip and speed shop in Puerto Rico. They had no oval track parts at all but I think they wholesaled parts to California Speed and Sport and we could just sign for whatever we could get from them.

Pretty cool sponsor name...  Always caught my eye.  And I always wondered about it because I know that Manhattan isn't exactly car friendly, never mind fast car friendly.....

Funny story

Manhattan Speed Shop always had a booth at the NY Custom Car Show  at the NY Coliseum in November . The  body was still in pretty good shape after the season ended so Whitey told Joe we would bring the car. It was a fun weekend to say the least but the best part was Sunday night when the show ended ,everyone started up their cars ,raced them up ,did burn outs and drove them out the door. I think I might be the only guy to ever drive an alky injected big block dirt modified across the floor of the NY Coliseum.

Love the photos. Miss those days.  Still can't believe the housing development, off the 4th turn, would lead to Windsor's demise.  The folks knew that a speedway was basically in their back yard when they bought there.  And then they complain about the noise!  Didn't matter who was there first, it was a numbers game.  The "4th turn" residents against Don Jones.  I also don't ever remember seeing that version of the R-10.

Cool story. I remember going to that show a few times, must have missed the year you were there but always remember "Big Daddy" Ed Roth and George Barris' cars.  Later found out how much George Leblank (c) was involved with "Big Daddy". I know I have pictures somewhere!

I believe EWS was on borrowed time with or without those houses just off 3 and 4. Theres no way a race track couldn exist in that location today. Land is just too valuable to use it a couple dozen times a year. Especially in 08520.

Money talks. What a shame. East Windsor was one of my top 5 tracks of all time. Bummer to say the least!

That might be me in the R-10?  When I started driving for them they had a gremlin that Billy Beasly had just left..This could possibly be it.. I ran a few times with it and best was 6th..Season was over and that winter they built the offset weld look alike body car.  Built by Chris Gartenmyer, Frankie, his dad, his cousin Lenny and Butch the philly cop...Hard working group there...HtH
