RIP.  One of the best on the mile dirt tracks, saw him win in 1968 at the Nazareth 1 1/8 mile.  Amazingly, his brother Bobby never won on the mile dirt tracks in a champ car.

Plus I consider Al to be the last true National Champion in 1970.  He won on dirt miles, Indy, shorter ovals and the IRP road coarse.

Sad to hear. I took these pictures at Trenton in the late 70's.  Walked up to him and he was as friendly as could be. Johnny Lightening slot cars, I bet, turned a lot of kids into fans. Rest in peace.

Later on.

So sorry to see that Al Unser has passed away. What a great racing legend.

The first time Dad took me to a USAC race, Al Unser won it. That was at the one and one eighth mile Nazareth National Speedway in 1968.

I too was at Nazareth National in 1968 when Big Al won his first USAC championship car race. He was always a class act, a smooth driver, an icon from what I consider to be the golden age of champ car racing. Pavement, dirt, road courses, Pikes Peak - he excelled on them all.

Al won the first Indianapolis 500 that I attended in 1971.  The #1 Johnny Lightning Special is still one of my all time favorite racecars.

Glad to have been around to see Al race at Trenton, Langhorne, Pocono and at Indy.  The Unser brothers, and that group of drivers who ran open wheel back in the early 70's will always have a special place in my vault of racing memories.

Johnny Lightning Special. I was nine years old. I touched it.
Gods were at the end of my street. Gods.

I have fond memories of working with Al when I was the PR person at Trenton International Speedway. A great racer and great man.

I became a life long San Diego Charger fan because of the blue and yellow colors and lightning bolts on this car. RIP.
