I was there...

The modified even was run on Friday of Speedweeks, which also included the IROC race, and I think one year included a non qualifiers race for the cup cars, even though no one transferred to the Sunday's 500 starting field which was kind of strange.

Friday was never as crowded as Thursday or Sunday, but I always enjoyed being there as it was a lot easier getting in and out of the track, and more comfortable to be in the stands.

When the modifieds first went to Daytona, they ran on the road course which resulted in quite a few strange looking creations.  When they moved them to the tri-oval, I remember the pole winner for the modifieds being faster than the pole winner for the 500 on at least one ocassion, which probably didn't make those in charge of the big Sunday show very happy as it kind of made the cup cars look slow compared to the modifieds.

Thanks for posting Jack - Was the picture of Richie coming taken off of turn 4 headed toward the start finish line, or was it between the start finish line and turn one?

This one was shot on the straight before the finish line but closer to the tunnel end of that straight.

My wife and I were there that year on a delayed honeymoon. We went to Valle's Steakhouse on Friday night before the 500 and damned if we didn't run into Richard Petty and family out for a quiet dinner. After seeing a few other people approach him for autographs, my starstruck wife decided to do the same. As always, Richard was very accomodating. When she returned to our table I asked her why she didn't ask for Kyle's autograph. Her response was that she was so excited that she didn't even realize that Kyle was there Tongue Out

Can someone tell me how they could call these cars modifieds? Looks like a late model to me. Looks like it's carrying the LF too.

Somehow they stuffed 15 inch tires under the wheel wells. Cars were very wide. Probably weighed about 2700 pounds. Compared to the Cup at 3700

That's probably Rusty Wallace in the red #66 car. The non-qualifiers race went away after they almost killed a couple drivers who probably shouldn't have been out there in the trioval in 1984. I was there in 1985 and Friday was the 4 cylinder class going 200 miles and IROC.
