Hi All

Just curious.  There seems to be a lot of repeat winners at the weekly and special shows so far this season.

As a fan of racing (not one particular driver/team) do you think:

  • it is good for the sport?
  • fans will lose interest if it continues?
  • other drivers will catch up to them or will the gap widden?
  • tracks should possibly do more to see if there is a reason one car is continually winning

This question is not for driver/team bashing.  It is more as a fan of the sport.  People tend to either like or hate the best drivers out there.  There is not a lot of "on the fence"  fans when it comes to the top drivers.  I am just curious to hear how others feel.  As for me, I enjoy going to the track.  It is a bonus if my favorite driver wins.

Thanks
T-Hem

I for one like to see different drivers win, but there is something special about a winning streak. Only if a driver continues to dominate, I think would hurt the sport.

I prefer to see streaks, like the one the 9S is on, stopped, and I generally root for the underdogs as opposed to the stars.

I can remember Stan Ploski winning something like 9 in a row at Windsor in the Big Donkey.  Was rooting for anybody, even Satan, to beat him!  At some point that same season or later, my guy, Pee Wee Griffin rips off around 4 in a row and I loved it!  BUT overall, I don't think its good for any track to be dominated by one driver.  We are lucky (I guess) to have to ongoing experiments on this very subject.  That being Bridgeport and New Egypt.  Since I'm not a fan of either driver (B. Grosso and Godown), their dominating the competition maksed it less enjoyable for me.  To be honest, I was clapping when Godown passed Grosso for the heat win at the New Egypt STSS show this past Tuesday.  They're both very good drivers.   To me, Godown's the real deal.  He's earned his way to the top.  The Grosso boys on other hand, are running the best stuff $$ can buy. That doesn't hurt and helps the learning curve.  Again, both are very good and are currently both on magic carpet rides (BTW, love Steppenwolf).  Just my opinion.  Scott Ely

Scott, "It's Never Too Late" to acknowledge that the New Egypt regulars looked weak against the invaders Tuesday night.

In the headline division, may the best guy win as much as they can. In lower divisions, I think it's bad. Hate seeing the same guy win week after week.

When guys get on hot streaks, figure it out and beat them. Sheppard is on an amazing streak right now. I've seen it multiple times with Stew and it's a lot of fun, he starts winning and it does'nt stop. The key is to get on that streak in the fall with all the big money shows. Stew won Fonda and Port Royal fall races last year for 103k.  It sure beats winning 10, $3000 to wins.

I think anyone, at any track, that wins all the time, is bad for the track. I know plenty of fans who said, "why go? So and so will win it anyhow."  Now I hear a lot of "I'll just watch it on Flo"!

i can remember the fans at wall booing tommie elliott in 1967-

he was one of the smoothest , slickest , cleanest drivers you ever saw , and won a lot

in the XL-1 for don house & al gerham -i think he was also track champion that year -

i imagine  kelly, dallenbach , etc, went through the same thing in the late

'50's early '60's , too--as well as a lot of the dirt drivers of that era -

if you're  a constant winner , it goes with the territory !!

blessings !!----------bill

I've been going to the races since 1965 and it happens all the time.  Opperman, Cagle, Brightbill, Chamberlain, Ploski, Pauch, Steve Kinser, Schatz, Horton and hearn, plus a lot more.  It's always going to happen.  As long as I see a good race I'm OK with it.

Winning streaks happen, and it can create interes as to when it will end. Currently, Derek Locke is undefeated since September 2020 in the 358 division at Williams Grove. He won Friday night when we were there. Of course, there are people that claim constant winners are cheating. In Derek's case, some think he should move to 410, which he recently started running part time.

Great comments from you 3Widers.  That's one of the reasons why I'm on this site just about every day!  This topic got to me to thinking about the sport in general.  I can remember when Jeff Gordon abd Jimmie Johnson could do nothing wrong in Nascar.  Granted, both drivers were in top notch equipment.  But then the cautions don't come at the right time or the late race pit strategy doesn't work, the competition gets better. things like that.

On a lesser scale, I think that happens at our Saturday night tracks also.  Living in the Bucks Co (Pa) Mercer Co(NJ) area, Brandon Grasso and Ryan Godown can't seem to do anything wrong right know.  Not to jinx them but, it wouldn't surprise me if you the wins may start to become a little harder to come by. I think luck plays an important part in all forms of racing.  Case in point, Dominic Buffalino and the Hyneman 126 have had -0- (ZERO) good luck this season.   Scott Ely
