Wall, in the 70's (as I knew it) to the early 80's was a race track you had to get to early and get "your seat". Crowds were big every week.  Many people got there early to watch warm ups. Jennie Nichol would open the gates no matter what. Forecast good or bad, they opened. 

The old story of guys calling from the pits pay phone to the track office, while standing in the rain, and the person, usually Jennie, telling them "yes, we are racing and the weather is good here".

On this night, a cancellation post warm ups, allowed a lot of fans a great photo op. I bet Frank A jr. has a bunch of these too

Different times now with weather in your hand.  Oh well!

I'm sure I'm not the only one who while looking at these great pictures... even for just a few moments, feels like they are 14 again, and enjoying looking at these....  Whether dirt or asphalt, or both... it's no mystery why so many of us can't stop remembering this time period at the races, like it just happened last weekend.

I always thought those little Chevy Monza Town Coupes looked like a shrunken Monte Carlo.

Some of the hatchback versions of the Monza came with a small V8 in it.  It was a smog engine, but still a lot of cubic inch for a little light car.

They were great until you tried to change the plugs - the rearmost ones were an absolute bear to change!

I belive its a monza you had to jack the motor up in the car to change the plugs!!!! thats why i remember.

Been there-done that !!! who among us hasn't gotten a wet ass in the pits ??!! they red flagged a heat race at wall

one time after a monsoon hit us -- barely made it off the track on the trailler from the water drowning the carb.! 

climbing out  of the racer ,  a bolt of lightning hit right next to  my truck/trailer --couldn't hear for the rest of the night !!

went drinkin' that night after they called it !!

Bill, you're correct, when they call a night for rain, it's a mad rush to the bar. One thing that has stayed consistant with Wall Stadium is, the partying. The 70's and 80's were crazy at Wall. John Blewett Sr owned the Edge of Town Bar in the 80's,  racer Rod Cunliffe owned The Cabin, and racer Goerge Andretta owns Pete and Elda's,  many late nights there after the races. There was never a shortage of bars near Wall Stadium. Now add in Mulligans, Woodys, and Tom's.  I remember a bunch of times it would rain out and we're in the bar and in comes the Flemington people that lived at the shore. Fun times!

sat drinkin' beer with him --just another guy you raced with week in and week out !!

he was on tv one time and i told my wife "i know him"

she thought i was full of it, 'till i got the scrapbook out !!

I can remember being completely bummed out on the night of a rainout at Wall!

Wall did everything they coud to get in the show. When it came time to dry the track, all the cars would run laps to help!

Kevin- Great shots from a great era of racing.  Can't comment on the bar scene when Wall was rained out as my days as a regular at Wall was in the mid 60s (15-16 yrs old).  Love these photos as they show that not only did the hot rods back then have unique personalities but the haulers/trailers did too.  Scott Ely

Being a truck guy from 6 years old, I just Love those classic car carriers.  You were advertising your car, your driver, your track, and auto racing in general.  How many people would see those trucks rolling down the road and just follow them to the track to see what was going on.  I'm sure we gained quite a few fans back in the day from that.

Coupes and Sedans, maybe a Falcon or two and a Corvair slid over the chassis.  Now THAT WAS modified stock car racing!!
