Gene sent these along via email from Butler Speedway in Quincy MI:




Gene added, "Still runs like a top".... although with the amount of miles he's logged with the #292, it might be time for it's 30,000 mile service!  From the shores of Daytona Beach to Quincy MI and quite a few stops in between, Gene gets the #292 out of the barn for sure...

The engine is perfect for doing this vintage stuff, sounds thumpy, starts everytime, doesn't overheat, power enough to hold it's own.  Handling is a bit quarky but I'm not getting involved with setups and such, I'll run it to the point it feels okay. Only problem is the seat can't be lowered, nor the roof rasied, & I need to squat at a 45deg angle to see, which makes the shoulder staps about useless.


It is a wonderful machine to illistrate that era when everyone built their own car in the manner they thought would work.

I'll add that the car was built by Bill and Billy Lowden who did an incredible job.  They followed as much of the information as we could give them on how the original was built over the winter of '71  - '72, including frame rails from a 1955 Chevy spaced out like the original was built, the right kind of Winters Rear with the old style bells, the correct type of front axle and buggy spring, and more details like that, complete with a 283 CI engine, period correct complete with an overflow jug from a 60's Corvette.  Bill and Billy fabricated all the of the front clip just like the original was, and did the same for the rear bumper, and the nerf bars.

Final blue spray was applied by D. Wolfe-358, and the personality of it was all brought out from the brush of Cos who did the lettering.

Glad Gene has gotten the car out to so many places where folks could see it, and is having fun doing so.

Our cars are from all types of racing and our track time is not about speed, because of the vast differences in the types of cars. ie: How would ya like to be in a midget and have the RU21 come flyin' up beside ya ?

Looking at the shot of the beautiful "2nd generation" 292 coupe reminded me of why I miss the hot rods of the 60s and 70s.  Like many of the cars of the past, you could tell who they were, even at Windsor whose back stretch lighting was not fan friendly. Can't say the same about today's race cars.  Scott Ely
