This year on Halloween will be 40 years when a nightmare struck, at Martinsville Speedway. The Cardinal 500 was a fall race that was held every October where, drivers participate from Northeast. At this event on October 31, 1982, under a caution during a Modified event Wall regular Ray Evernham, was warming his tires until another Wall regular, Tony Siscone struck Evernham's car near full speed. Fire immediately ignited and, the two cars were being devoured by the flames. 

Evernham, got out of his car and, Siscone had to be assisted from Brian Ross and others. Evernham, sustained second degree burns of the neck and face. Siscone, sustained the same burns as Evernham however, he sustained third degree burns of the hands. Siscone, missed nearly seven months of work (school teacher at the time) due to therapy of his hands. In 1983, Siscone returned to racing and, he had to wear special gloves in order to keep the blood circulating. In fact, the fans along with the officials and the racing community were thankful that Siscone made a miraculous recovery.

In 1993, Wall Stadium was preparing for the season. However, the fans had dealt with a terrible blow because, the full blown Modifieds had been dropped from the schedule due to a dispute over the purse structure. The Modifieds, went to the non defunct Flemington Speedway and, fans had followed. In 2002, the full blown Modifieds returned for a couple of races which was, the RoC tour. 

Now, the full blown Modifieds race at Turkey Derby since 2002.
