Not really sure but the founder, Joe Barsda, was a racer himself, most notably in Midgets. Since California was ahead of the curve at the time, most of the good speed parts had to be shipped in from there. So Joe set up his business to import the good speed parts and then distribute them to the Northeast competitors thru his shop.

A the side on the subject.  I believe that John Skistimas and Cliff Dwyer both worked at the California Speed Shop before starting up Raceway Speed Center in Bordentown. Scott Ely

Edited: Updated info:

“In 1945 when my uncle Ed Barzda came back from the war he started selling mufflers and chrome parts out of the front of the shop. Everything came out of California manufactures so hence the name”

Joe Barzda did not start the California Speed and Sport shop his brother Ed Barzda did. Ed started selling mufflers and chrome accessories out of the front of the garage on Jersey and Lake Street. He expanded from their buying the other half of the building from the boat company that owned it. They became warehouse distributors for most of the major speed equipment manufacturers who were located in California. The Barzda brothers Ed Joe Tony and my father Paul all grew up next door at the grocery store next door and worked there and also at the families tavern Joe’s Barn across the street. Joe saw how busy the shop had become and moved over to help Ed run the business and also started to race cars. All four brothers over the years were involved in running both businesses.

California Speed and Sport Shop is still in the same location today and we are open daily.

Jim Barzda

I probably was 14 years old when I first went to California Speed Shop. A kid in  candy store. LOL I got to know the four brothers over the years I built my race cars. I don't think they realized how much they helped that farm kid. What a great place.

YOUR RESPONSE WAS EDITED BECAUSE OF THE BOLD TEXT TO TBONE THAT YOU USED STATING "THAT IS NOT WHAT I TEXTED YOU.  IF YOU'RE GOING TO QUOTE ME, QUOTE ME CORRECTLY."

I DIDN'T LIKE THE VIBE AND I PAY THE BILLS HERE SO I EDITED IT.

IT WAS ALSO EDITED BECAUSE I'M NOT A BIG FAN OF BOLD FONTS AND OVERSIZED FONTS, ESPECIALLY WHEN USED TO OVERSTATE SOMETHING THAT DOESN'T NEED TO BE OVERSTATED.

The body of your post was not edited and we appreciate the correct information you provided.
