Some of the best races I ever saw were the Run Whatcha Brung races. In case you've have never witnessed one, It was a wide open, basically no rules race. Guys would put wings on their modifieds to look like a sprint car, and guys would put bodies on their sprint car to make them look like a modified. I'm not sure if there was a weight restriction. Jmac or Howie Cronce would know better than I. Hoping to hear Howie's adventures running these show with the R10. Here are a few pictures of some of these cars. Feel free to add any pictures that you might have. Any stories too. Merry Christmas everyone.

Lenny, great shots!  Those "run what ya brung" shows must have made the guys that sold sheet metal happy.  Kenny Brightbill looks like he could plow snow with his creation!  Scott Ely

Yes it was different.  Modified Sprints were Sportsman motors and no bodies on the cars (No doors and quarters)

This is Keith O'Toole at Flemington in 1985, apparently a midweek show. That's my wing, weird part is: I never actually met Keith, and I never "knowingly" lent a wing to anybody. My friend Ernie Allen posted this picture on Facebook a few years ago, you can imagine my surprise! Eventually Keith saw it and saw my comments, and thanked me for lending the wing, he never had any idea where it came from, it just appeared one day. I worked nights at this time and we kept the car at driver Rod Hanna's house. He never said he lent it, so I'm guessing a friend of ours grabbed it and returned it unscathed.

Same season, same wing (for sure, because we destroyed this wing at Bridgeport mid season). Ray Pursell, no mystery here, him and Rod were good friends, although I didn't hear about this lend either.

Great photos, Lenny! I don't recall ever seeing the pictures of Robbie Green, Ray Damala, or some of the others before.

Merrittvile Speedway in the 1970s had a Run whatcha brung race at the end of the season. Will Cagle was there and there was a mini stock that was racing. Someone joked it was the first time Will Cagle ran against a mini stock.

Going from memory, Bridgeport quickly amended the rules by saying cars had to be self starting to keep the sprint cars out. Or am I misremembering?
