The drag rubber was cool looking but what a great group of photo's from a very innovative period in Northeast Modified racing.

Who started running the drag tires first on the dirt ovals in the Northeast? I thought it was Brightbill at Reading.

Thanks clevco. Makes sense that the drag rubber experiment would work excellently at "The Wheels" a full 5/8 mile with long straightaways. It usually stayed tacky back then. Would not be able to run them today as the cost would be astronomical.

Im not sure but I think Kenny weld had something to do with starting it...Does anyone remember the OPEN show at Bridgeport when he almost got lapped by Chamberlain as he was packing the outside groove down by himself...Gerry had him in sight when Weld took off and passed every car at least once then he sold a few cars after that display...Big Alum Big Block and drag rubber...was quite a show..

Thanks Hat! An old rail bird told me it was "Kenny" who started the drag tire thing, assumed Brightbill, never thought about Weld

Lenny- Great photos from a great period in "Saturday night" racing.  I still remember when the "Reading boys" showed up at Windsor, all shoed with drag rubber.  Looks like new drag rubber on Kenny Weld's restored 29.  Wonder where they got those babies from?  Scott Ely

Did they run drag tires at the Nazareth big track when it reopened in 82?

Yes, drag was allowed when Viccari ran the place.

I'm wondering if the reason drag tires worked was beyond the obvious "bigger tire footprint to track", and if it had anything more to do with racing the rear of the car (higher center of gravity/maybe putting more weight on the right rear at a time when I think most were still looking for weight on the left rear???, or if more flex in the sidewall softened things up in the rear at a time when I think a lot of folks were still running somewhat rigid leaf spring set ups.

I may not know why they worked, but I do know they looked cool as heck, and fit right in with the look that I tried to create whenever trying to draw a picture of a modifed in my note book during high school classes!

Last question:  Was a drag tire "a drag tire" because of the height/width or soft sidewall, or was it a particular size that pushed into "drag tire" status.

Here's what looks to me like a big tire on the rear of the #292 in 1973, but I don't think it is a drag tire, correct?

My understanding was that under acceleration the sidewall flexed to increase the circumference of the tire. This acted like a gear change resulting in more speed at the end of the straightaway.

RUCU you have some of it but also they were really soft and sticky compounds.. Winsor was a perfect track for them.. Bridgeport worked good also..Later years (79-80) at Reading with the R-10 we were running them..Some of the larger bodys looked better with them than the small tires.. I did not like them at Flemington as the sidewall moved around too much and steered the rear too much for me..Plus the track usaually got drier in the feature...

Thanks Howie and clevco for the clarifications. I would also think that the drag tires would give the car more forward bite coming off the corners as the sidewalls grew. PS- I never read Shampines book, just have memories from over 40 years ago as an "Assistant Crew Chief". I always stopped by to at least say Hi! to you Howie after the races. If I can dig up an old photo of me in my 20's I'll post it to put a face to my name!
