Thanks to a lot of legwork by Harmony Speedway Historian Greg Collins, I was able to put together a new section for the main site called "Harmony Speedway Remembered."  (Thanks Greg!)

Hopefully Greg will see this and can provide some additional information as to how the year 2023 fits in with the history of Harmony Speedway.

I hope you'll take a few minutes and check out the information that Greg has provided.

Here's the link:  http://www.3widespicturevault.com/3wides_Harmony_COLLINS_MAIN.htm

2023 . . . . It was 60 years ago on June 7, 1963, that the Harmony Speedway opened under NASCAR sanction.  Sammy Beavers won the 25-lap modified feature event that evening, Fred Fritsche won the 15-lap novice feature. And it was 50 years ago on September 7, 1973, that the final racing events were held at the track. Jay Beers won the 20-lap limited sportsman feature event that evening, Clarence Hill won the 15-lap late model feature.

Amazing to me that it's been a half century since race cars circled the D-shaped dirt track in my hometown.

Sincere thanks and appreciation to our 3Wides host Joe Macfarlan for his assistance and expertise in setting up this tribute section to Harmony Speedway.

Thanks Greg for keeping the Harmony Speedway torch lit.  When I was a kid living in Belvidere, when the wind was blowing right you could hear the announcer and the sound of the cars coming up the river.

By the way- the picture of "last winner" Jay Beers may be the only picture I've ever seen of Jay without a big 'ol grin on his face.  Jay was always smiling.

I remember that Jay Beers was one of the first North East style dirt Modified drivers to use the Nascar style window nets. He installed them on both sides after being cut by a beer bottle or a rock that some stupid degenerate threw into his cockpit along the back part of Harmony Speedway. Thinking it was slow lap warmups. Half of the pits emptied, they caught the guy, he got the beating of his life, then the police (NJ State Troopers?) arrested him.

I recall hearing of Harmony being built and it's opening, but I never got to a race there.

I may have missed it among the pages of information ... but how about a documentation on it's closing, why and so forth.  Were the fans not turning out ... ?

Joel

Thanks Joe for this work your doing... I watched a few at Harmony before I was racing...The big con for the track for me was the stands were too far from the homestretch...They made the dragstrip along the front so fans could watch fron their seats..I wish more tracks had the dogleg backstretch like Harmony...It made handling as important as horsepower and made driver techneak important also...

Greg did all the legwork Howie, and provided it to me an an easy to convert to a webpage manner.  Everything was organized and labeled (that's just how Greg is!), so my part of the deal was just to create a layout to make it easy for folks to work with.

Thanks Greg, and glad folks are enjoying the new section.

Jay Beers once told me that you could tell who the newbees were at Harmony by who lifted going into the dogleg.

The only picture I ever took at Harmony is on Page 4a of the 60's Sectin in the Picture Vault. It was of Clarence Williamson 45X 's accident in Turn 4.  Clarence was not seriously injured. The car not so much.

Thanks Greg and Joe. Great to see this coming together. Now I also just learned there was a dogleg in it.
