One of the all time greats and one of my all time favorites. Penske never should have fired him for getting hurt at Syracuse, he would have won Indy.

Agree with you 100%, John Mc.  Thanks for posting this awesome image, Jack.  I was there that day, was torn between wanting both Gary and Billy to get the win that day.

Great action shot.

When it came to Indy cars, I always found myself rooting for the underdogs... guys that were fast enough to win but for whatever reason, didn't, or certainly didn't get many.  Gary Bettenhausen, Mike Mosely and Lloyd Ruby were a few on that list.

For anybody with FLO, there's a film/special they did on The Bettenhausens which leaves you asking how much can one family...., decade after decade...., give to racing.

There is a great documentary on FLO about the Bettenhausen family.  Highly recommend giving it a watch if you haven't already!

Great shot of Gary B. A while back there was a question about anyone who raced on all 3 configurations of Naz. National, I thought it was him, ran in 68 & 69 but I guess he only raced the Menards car at Indy in the 90's.
