Where did you go, how was the show?  If you watched on a certain platform, how was the show?

I caught up on some FLO replays that I hadn't gotten around to watching earlier:

  • Larry Rice Classic USAC Wingless Sprints (Great)
  • High Limits Sprint Car Series from Lakeside Speedway (Great)
  • USAC Western State Midgets at Merced CA  (Great)
  • NARC Sprints at Tulare CA (night 1)  Will watch night 2 soon  (Great)

Also watched a lot of the INDY practice day, and listened to all the back stories leading up to this year's 500.  Disappointed that there's only 34 cars, but I just have to get used to it as I can't remember when there was a bump day where a bunch of folks went home.  Cars look really stable, so hopefully it'll be a safe month of May at Indy.  I'm looking forward to staying up to date everytime coverage is on Peacock.

I DVR'd/fast forwarded through xFinity and Cup.  We all know it, so it's preaching to the choir, but with no penalties for blocks that cause huge wrecks, and no penalties for running over guys causing even more wrecks, it is nothing more than a predictable mess week after week.  The last time xFinity ran, Hemorick caused a huge crash coming to the checkered.  This week, a ridiculously late block by him caused an even bigger wreck, but at least this time he ended up on his lid instead of a 2nd place finish a few weeks earlier, but expect more of the same until Nascar penalizes such awful mirror/spotter assist driving, or until teams run out of money, or sadly, until someone gets really hurt.

As for cup, yesterday's (Sunday) accident, and the huge impact between Ryan Preece and Kyle Larson, it too was caused by "NASCAR approved" legal, agressive pushing/driver's trying to make a spot where there wasn't one...  was one 180° spin away from what would have been a very serious injury or worse to Kyle Larson.  Had the driver's side of the #5 been facing traffic when he was hit, it would have been tragic, and maybe then Nascar would consider penalizing the blocking and pushing each other out of the way, but as I've droned on before, it's all they have now... "The Big One"... The Multiple Green White Checkered".... and the reaction of Mike Joy in the booth as if it was somehow a surprise as he somberly offers...  "What a shame..." ... "So and so had such a good run going...."  Almost like if that was the conclusion that nobody saw coming... Except EVERYBODY.

Will look to get out to a local show this weekend....

Went to the Bridgeport SDS show Sun. night.

DISLIKES: Track was very dusty with a troublesome rut between turns 3 and 4.  The speedster field totaled 8 cars, of which 2 did not start the feature.  The speedster feature was pretty much a "spread out and follow the leader" race.  Was looking forward to watching Pauch SR race the R7 speedster.  He ran 2 or 3 laps in the heat and pulled off with his night done. The modified heats were so-so entertainment wise.  As much as I'm not a Godown fan, I wish he ran as he is entertaining to watch.

LIKES:  The modified field, mostly New Yorkers, was stout.  The 2 modified consis were good races.  Pauch JR looked way off handling wise in his heat but looked alot better in the consi he won.  Given the race was 75 laps, I thought the field would get strung out and "just ride to click off laps" like Nascar.  Couldn't be any further from the truth as every driver was driving hard to get that next position.  At the checkers, the top 3 were almost nose to tail at the finish.  Was happy that local drivers took home 2nd and 3rd.

SUMMARY: You would think that, overall, I didn't like the show.  Actually, I'll go again to a Bridgeport show as the talent level does get ramped up in these specials.  After Matt Sheppard showed that his is human after all (started on the pole in the feature, suffered a flat about 5 laps into the feature), the race seemed to get better.  Guess everyone thought they had a chance after Super Matt's misfortunes.  Scott Ely

Just posted by Bridgeport Today on their F.B. page:

IT’s TIME TO MOVE FORWARD
After a handful of weeks working with the new surface, we have made the decision to remove the new clay from the track. Our racers and our fans are our top priority and we feel it’s best to get back to the Bridgeport Speedway of the last 3 seasons. "

What did I watch.
I was initially headed to NES, but I changed my mind after seeing the divisions on the card.  Watched parts of the 3-hour Xfinity race. Usual results big wrecks all race long.  Might as well call it CrashCar.

Watched parts of the Cup Race Sunday. Bubba gets an award for the worse paint scheme! Larsen is lucky he did not get injured see Joe's post above. On another note, Kyle Larsen posted a picture of the left side of the current Cup Cars on his page. They have a giant steel plate welded to the left sidebars saying it is designed differently than the right side.

Don- In my opinion, thats great news!  Sunday's show, although a good one, was very very dusty!  I don't recall Bridgeport being that dirty for my several visits last year.  I commend Doug Rose and his crew for this decision.  Hopefully, the "new" old clay will remedy the dust problem.  Scott Ely

To the mention above regarding Kyle Larson, I didn't see what Kyle posted regarding the left side of his car, but I do know that when they interviewed him right after the wreck (after the huge impact to the right side of the car) he said the inside of his car was a mess or something like that.

With the way NASCAR controls the messaging every step of the way, I wouldn't be surprised if he or his raceteam didn't get a friendly "nudge" to put something out there quickly to defuse his statement about what we saw/experienced inside of his car, and instead, redirect the attention to how safe their wonderful new car is.

The focus should be on why the majority of the wrecks happen, and the answer is because NASCAR needs them to have a marketable product.  If they didn't need them, they would penalize drivers who cause late blocks that are usually the cause of the wrecks, along with drivers who push/knock others out of their way, which causes most of the others.

"Boys Have At It" only works if "Boys Can Beat The Crap Out of Those Who Cause The Wrecks" and those days are long gone...

Hate to say it, but they need to have blocking and avoidable contact rules like Indycar does, but I don't see it happening soon as they know that reducing the amount of wrecks will turn away even more of their dwindling fan base because they know that if you take away the "Big One" or more accurately "The Big Ones", and take away the almost predictable multiple Green White Checkered wreckfests, there's not a whole lot for NASCAR to work with...  Just look at the way they promote theirs sport with promos of cars flying throught the air backwards, etc., (with some burnout footage sprinkled in Undecided) which if it wasn't for the blocking and shoving they'd have nothing to promote their upcoming events.

Bridgeport on Sunday;

Dislikes:  Very dusty, reminded me of sitting in box seats at Flemington.  Ruts in turns were bad.

I lost my new 30 dollar hat that I purchased at the Dirt trailer. Must have dropped the hat on the way to my car.

Likes: Good field of outsiders and good showing by local drivers. Stangle with a 2nd, Pauch jr. 3rd, Gular 4th.

I will be returning to Bridgeport.

Smokey Mountain Speedway in Maryville TN. I was in the pits to watch the Steel Block Bandits Late Model series with a 50 lap $5000 to win race. 47 cars in the pits from 9 states. 4 heats with 4 qualifying and 2 B mains  with 4 out of each. The feature went from green to lap 47 caution free with cars passing the whole way. Lap 47 saw one car slap the backstretch wall to bring out the caution. The next 3 laps ran of quick with Skip Arp winning. The lare models were joined by sportsmen late models and front wheel drive that had about 15 cars each. Show started on time 630 and was over about 1030. Very well run show with very little down time. Will I return, yes will be back sometime this summer.
