"Two Kids"

47 years ago today on May 31, 1976, one 19 year old 'kid' (pun intended) was bouncing off the outside boards, while honing his racing skills at Flemington Fair Speedway, all while another 19 year old kid was honing his racing photography skills by the inside boards between turn one and two (which, two years later, bounced off of him there.)
(Billy "The Kid" Pauch--2 years before he got that nickname--shown here with his hands off the steering wheel--either from the impact or maybe just trying to prevent broken hands, wrists or fingers.)

My memory isn't that great, but I thought Billy couldn't fit a big bilock in this car. Was at his place in 1977, and he was unhappy with the Falcon he had built, wanted to switch back to the Gremlin, but couldn't fit a big-block in the sportsman car.

Sold Roy Pauch A Big block Chevy engine for Billys car thru John Skismas at Raceway Speed Center.  Was soooo glad to help out Roy, and power Billy entrance into Modified division ..

The engine I sold him was from my #21 Ollie Bulter drove..  Roy was a good friend and one hell of a driver/owner.  I had the engine for sale at Raceway Speed Center in Bordentown, NJ...  John Skismas contacted me and said he was sponsoring Roy for Billy to go modified up from sportsman and could I sell Roy my engine at a reduced price, to which I agreed and the rest is history.   Fred Menschner.

One thing missing from Fred's post above is that I'm sure the engine was also built by Fred.

That's for the post Fred - great stuff.

I don't think those of us who were fortunate enough to be at the races in the late 60's and early 70's realize how young Fred Menschner was, as a car owner, and as the engine builder.  With drivers Ray Neary and Oliver Butler behind the wheel of the #21, he was always in the hunt and pulled off a few big wins at a time when almost by definition, modified car owners (Deasey, Norcia, Brenn, etc.,) were all supposed to be older/more experienced.

I don't think I ever asked, but I'll thinking that Fred was a modified car owner/engine builder while still in his early 20's.

Joe, To answer you questions....Yes I did build the engine I sold to Roy.  It was one of the three engines I built for Ollie in the #21....When Ray Neary and myself won the Harmony Speedway opener in 1970, I was 22 yrs old...When Ollie Bulter and I raced, I was 25 yrs old..  When I bult engines for Joe Hall, I was 27 yrs old..LOL..

That was a long time ago...Thanks for asking...Your friend Fred.

Neat story, Fred! Good stuff. I was wondering if that 1976 Memorial Day modified race was Billy's first time running modified there? I'm real sure that day was my first time shooting with a press pass at Flemington. It was only a one-shot deal, since I was turned down that year for a season press pass there, so I went off to Middletown for 1976, since they approved a season pass for me that year.

Nice history.  Ray was awesome in the 21. Nice to know Fred's motor could help Billy's modified start. Racers would help each other out.
