I think they were called Marston Mats. They were used in WWII for temporary runways and landing strips. |

That looks like Gene Dewitt with the glasses in the 3rd picture. He was the sponsor of Richie Evans' cars. When Gene died years ago his coffin had #61 on it. Gene's grandson Byron Dewitt races in the Street Stock class at Genesee Speedway. |

From the Race of Champions program it appears this was 1973. #40 - Don Diffendorf #26 - Paul Radford spinning after blowing his engine #15 - Graeme Bolia spinning #5 - Bugs Stevens also blowing an engine
