I never saw Tom McCann in that black vega...I think it's his best looking ride!

Good mix of years. 17 Ron Bouchard. Finished second to Gil one year.  14 was a Long Island car. name? Outside of McCann was Sonny McCurdy 00. Sweet 16 Herbie Tillman. Than Tom McCann again in his familiar 16

Did'nt know Herbie Tillman ran asphalt up here, only ever saw him on dirt. He always had "sweet" rides though.

Never knew Herbie Tillman ran Wall Stadium.  I don't like bringing up a "dark part" of a drivers past, especially since I liked Herbie.  But I'll bet this Wall photo was taken in the very late 70s or 1980/ 1981.  The timing is important as Pee Wee Griffin, Gary Balough and Herbie were all arrested in 1981 on drug distribution charges.  I recall that Herbie was running a very classy looking Chevette (much like Frank Cozze's) on dirt and I found that strange as Herbie never really had 1st class equipment.  There's a photo of his Chevette in the 70s section, page 150.  Comments on the  photo estimate it was taken in the late 70s/ early 80s.  Unless Herbie  their debt driving for someone, I think I know where the cash came from to buy these 2 beautiful hot rods.  Don't get me wrong, the boys tried the "easy money" avenue and it didn't work out, and they all did jail time.  Still, I always liked, and rooted for those "rebels".  Scott Ely

It's tough to read on the back of the photo photo of the Tillman#16, but it looks like "11/79."

Maybe somebody who was there, or has a program could confirm.

It was 1979. Herbie ran a couple races at year end including Turkey Derby. The car was painted by Ted Alt and lettered by Cos.

YEAH , Scott , damn shame what happened--Herbie was as nice of a man as you'll ever meet -

visited him at his home in N.MIAMI BEACH in 1977 when i was thinking of moving to FL.

( Hey---you could race all year long!! )-and he was just a great guy !!--he had just completed a cage/frame

building a car to come north with --

blessings !!

Bill is 100% spot on. Herbie was as nice as could be. Met him thru Ted Alt and we used to eat lunch at the Circle Inn go go bar in Old Bridge.  Ted's garage was a hangout for a bunch of racers.  Herbie would be there and if you paid for something he was pissed. He loved everyone being there having a good time. Pretty cool for a 19 year old new drinker!
