BLEWETT WINS WALL MODIFIED RACE SATURDAY

WALL, NJ ~ Wall Stadium Speedway officials braved their way through humid conditions and scattered area storms that stopped action at other speedways to present a full card of auto racing on Saturday night. Howell's Jimmy Blewett was one of the individuals who was happy about the track's persistance as he won his second 40-lap Modified stock car main event of the season and the 87th of his career.

Brothers Jarret and Carsten DiGiantomasso, both of Jackson, led the field to the green before Jarret jumped to the lead. Steven Reed, also of Jackson, throttled into second spot almost immediately and chased the leader while Blewett began his charge to the front from the back of the pack.

By lap 20 Blewett was up to third before advancing to second behind the hard charging Reed when he slipped into the lead. After the event's only caution on lap 22, Blewett chased Reed before diving into the lead on lap 23 with an inside pass of Reed. Blewett then raced on for the win with Reed, Carsten DiGiantomasso, Holmdel's Andrew Krause and Milltown's Derek Hopkinson wrapping up the top five.

“I really want to thank all the fans who showed up to support us tonight despite all the weather around here,” Blewett said. “Rob Ormsbee and the crew had the car running on rails.”

Teddy Cranmer of North Hanover lead the companion 25-lapper for the Sportsman cars from start to finish for his first career win. Chris Silvestri of Hazlet worked his way through the pack before finishing second. Tyler Truex of Egg Harbor Township, Brian Spencer of Old Bridge and Bryan O'Shea of Neptune City completed the top five.

Twin 20 lap main events for the Legend Cars came down to battles between Alex McCollum of China Grove, N.C. And East Milford's Mike Alcaro. McCollum swept both races while Alcaro was twice the runner up. Nate Divone, Ryan Kuhlthau and Brad Lowmaster wrapped up the top five in the first race while Kuhlthau, Joe Przybylinski, Jr. and Justin Teresak were third through fifth in the second race.

Alex Graetz of Wall won the 25-lapper for the Fast 4 cars over Billy Pross and Sean Vuksanic. Freehold's Howie Conk was tops in the Limited Late Model 25 with Mike Tillett and James Moorman finishing second and third.

The 2023 Wall Stadium Speedway season continues this Saturday night, July 22, with the Modifieds, Sportsman, Factory Stocks, Fast 4s and Legend Cars all in action.

Wall Stadium is located on Route 34 in Wall Township, N.J., just one mile north of Garden State Parkway exit 98 and Interstate 195 exit 35B. The speedway hotline number is 732-681-6400 and email address is ckmotorsports@aol.com.

Whoever had the idea to start the show early, made the right call! That was one of the fastest-moving shows in the past 2-3 years. The track should do that every week! The show ended at 8:47 pm!  It would be nice if a few more Modifieds and 4 cylinders were on hand.   Below are the Sportsman and Legend feature winners. The broom idea after he the Legend driver swept both features. Was a good idea!

I often wonder why Wall has a problem drawing cars. I checked out some of Mohoning Valleys fields, seems like 13 to 14 modifieds for a regular show.  A lot more for extra distance shows, but not many.  There is a 75 lap race coming up paying extra but not nearly what a dirt pays.  I don't have any idea what Wall pays out for it's divisions but it could have something to do with the small fields.

This is odd, but over the years I have been at Wall, I know a lot of young guys who start racing. They move up a division or two, than find it getting too expensive to race. Most of these guys, and not saying it in a bad way , are the field fillers. Their priorities change, they get married, a family, and a mortage. They quit.  Which in reality is the right thing to do, so you really lose the "eye candy" of a 22 car field. I go to some tracks and see what these guys spend on cars and trailers etc. and than see and how they live and I respect the guys more and more who quit and get their priorities in order. I don't want this to sound pretencious, but it is reality.

I learned a while ago that the 22 car field is in the rear view mirror for asphalt. You really only need 12 cars or so, because most races end up with 12 cars or so. Less cautions, more racing. (We hope). Most races only come down to four cars and usually one or two can win on a given night.

If the car count is in the "teens" or lower, that division should run twin 20 lap features only, no heat races. Fully invert the 2nd feature. You could then gamble on sandbagging in the 1st one. Local weekly short tracks are turning into what the local weekly drag races have become. Very little if any fans, and race for trophies. Until the economy improves when people have more disposable income I don't know what the answer is to get more cars and more crowd. This past weekend the weather thew everyone a loop.

I remember way back when, when Windsor had a rainout, my uncle, Charlie Weber, took me to a Gulf station where 2 fine looking modifieds were housed, and PeeWee Griffin and his family lived in squalor.  I'm sure that Charlie gave him tire money in exchange for the "Weber's TV Special" on the roof, but a sweet running big block isn't a fair exchange for a family living on sterno cooked hot dogs.
