I was reading at a discussion in the 70's section where several Vault contributors were talking about being scared to walk on the little road that ran next to the wall between the 3rd and 4th turns while the cars were on the track when they were kids (yeah, me too!).  How about those dudes near the "fence" in picture 1?  I am not sure if the fence is there for car containment or just to mark the ourside of the track.  Or maybe so the horses didn't continue straight during the fair races.

Appears to be back when race fans grew on trees.

Those spectators in the photos, especially the last one were either very brave, or very, well you know. Scott Ely

From those photos, the safest place to be when at the races back then was inside a race car!

For the Flemington pictures, I don't recognize the cars so I'm thinking this is the Eastern Association not the American Association. With the lack of leaves, my guess would be April 24, 1949. Winner was Chic Dinatale of Trenton.

That Strupp car is a pretty strange mix of body work.  Are they connected to Dutch Strupp/Sonny Strupp?  None of the crew look like Sonny Strupp.  Curious.
