An aerial shot of the Nazareth Speedway half-mile dirt track, from 40 years ago today on August 23, 1983.
Back then, Braden's Airport offered short plane rides for only $20. What a bargain!
When the pilot asked me if there was any place local that I wanted to see from the air, my only answer was Nazareth Speedway.
Solt Chevrolet is on the bottom left. The Acme Market is on the bottom far right with Food Lane (or Falk's Food Basket) and the Farmer's Market along the backstretch on the right and Keppel's IGA by route 248.

I go back to when the back stretch was the home stretch & you entered from under the covered grand stands.  Rides in the race cars & Easter Egg hunts in the infield.  Tex flagging from the track & running to the flag stand.

One night we got there when races were already going on.  My Dad, his brother, myself & cousins.  My uncle went in first while my Dad was buying our tickets.  I go in under the grand stands & there's my uncle fist fighting with someone.  I run & get my Dad.  When we get back to the "scene"  the cops are kicking us out of the races.  Didn't matter that we had already bought tickets.  We went back outside,  Walked to the back stretch.  Our Dads made us all switch shirts (like they weren't going to recognize us).  Paid again to get in & watched from the back stretch.  We raced at Nazareth on occasion.  Mostly ran our cars at Hatfield Speedway, Reading & Grandview

Great shot Jack, brings back lots of memories. Went to Bradens once with my brother and his girlfriend to take a sky ride, my first time in a plane, a twin engine 4 seater. We took off, 120 or so mph awsome up we go, i'm in front fly up over our houses in Bangor head back to the airport, pilot puts down landing gear... buzzer starts going off, landing gear unsafe light flashing...I'm freaking out! Pilot says relax, landing gear locks in, we land safely. I can see where the Giant is, Auto zone, tractor supply and the strip mall up around where turn 3 was.Things sure have changed at the intersection of route's 191 and 248 in 40 years.

Cool story. Sounds like a scary ending to flight. Where the Tractor Supply sits now  would be way out of view on the lower right.

$20 good choice. In my mind I remember you taking the infamous wolf man shot at Flemington in the Stanton 75, if I've got that wrong I apologize.

Yup, I did shoot that Wolfgang wolf-man moon shot. It was in Open Wheel Magazine. It was a full moon that night at Flemington and the moon was in that spot at the track where Wolfgang raced by me. So that was a real thing that night. But truth by known--my photo was a trick shot, because it was impossible to freeze both Wolfgang and that moon in the frame, plus the moon looked way smaller with my short 85mm lens that night. So that would have looked like a dull shot with the moon being so small and or blurry with that lens. So to illustrate that 'Wolf(gang) howling at the moon' shot, I had to do some darkroom magic (no photoshop back then) and make a composite picture, which is two pictures combined on one sheet of photo paper. It was tricky combining a moon negative, that I shot earlier with a bigger telephoto, and the negative of the Wolfgang Stanton 75 racing by at Flemington. It took me a few times to get it to blend properly--all trial and error.

I got a shot of Wall Stadium from the back seat of the Collings Foundation's P-51 Mustang when they flew out of Allaire Airport.  Please don't ask me what that ride cost, it wasn't $20!

Probably had to put another zero on there and then bump up the first number some, unfortunately for that Mustang ride.

Over 2 for 30 minutes.  Dual control, Mark handed me the stick for a while.  He guided me through 4 point rolls, wing overs and a loop.  Ride of a lifetime for a self proclaimed warbird nut.  Unfortunately because of their B-17 crash a few years ago, you will never see the Collings Foundation touring again.
