I remember Red Farmer flipping his #97 at in probably the early 80's Daytona when it was still called the Permatex 300, on possibly the opening lap... it was just past the tri oval I think, heading toward turn 1.

Sadly, the Ryan Preece flip reminded me of the Bruce Jacobi flip coming off of turn 2 in which Bruce lost his life.

I didn't see the update on Ryan yet, but did see that he was standing next to his car after the crash, and that they then had him lay on the stretcher and were headed to Halifax Hospital.

Tough kid in probably the safest race in the world.  Tough deal because he was basically hitting asphalt and not grass.

There is a video of the crash on YouTube showing the window net coming out of the car and the roof hatch being pulled off. Carbon fiber didn't work well as a roof . This was the first flip of this nexgen car so I am sure more changes are coming.  They are also looking at the smooth bottom of the frame as it just acts like a wing, stick your hand out the car window and see what happens. More changes and we will be back to the old car, which seemed a whole lot safer than this new and improved version . I talked to Red the day after that flip at Daytona. He was on crutches and told me he was messing with the staff at the hospital. They couldn't find his knee cap on the X-ray, he never told them he had it removed years before. I have a great picture of that car in my office it is like it went through a compactor. Both guys very lucky for sure. I remember Troyer doing the same thing twice , once at Daytona and once at Pocono in a modified, how we didn't loose more guys over the years still amazes me.

I was thinking the same thing with the bottom of the car being flat and so sealed off, at one point it looks like it catches the wind and causes it to go even higher.  They'll need to do some kind of flaps like they have done on the roof, that open to allow the air to maybe move through the car (?) to make it want to set back down.

I don't know... I'm no engineer, but there's definitely something to be learned from this, and fortunately, it didn't take a serious injury or fatality to make those involved aware that a change is needed.

Nascar promotes the sport by featuring the spectacular crashes, but I'm sure all agree that they want to find a way to reduce the chance of serious injury once something has happened that raises awareness.

I was actually watching this live Saturday.

It remided me of Troyer in 1971 barrel rolling down the back straight.

I can't stand Denny Hamlin but boy oh boy, he speaks his mind. I watched a clip of him talking about it last night. He mentioned how after this flip NASCAR will need to alter the cars and by the time they're done all the cars will weigh 4000lbs. He finished by saying they already need to look at a Next Gen 2.0 car. The sanctioning body cannot be happy with him saying that.
