Msg ID: 2792296 Where’d you go, how was the show? Grandview

I seldom do this anymore, but here goes. Went to Grandview as a fan. Wife basically told me to go to get out of her hair while she prepared food for a get together.

Sat w my nephew Chris Boyer and his son Travis, they go weekly, huge Brett Kressley fans. When I go by myself (I live 20 miles away) I sit with them in the 4th turn non drinking section. Not my favorite seats, but that's where they sit.

I seldom go to Grandview just for modifieds, URC was there Saturday, so right up my alley. Unfortunately URC is a shell of what it was when we raced with them. Few races and not many recognizable names. 21 sprints so just 3 heats and a feature. The feature started out as a runaway by Adam Carberry, until 5 laps in, he collided with a lapped car and took a helluva flip. Another flip on ensuing restart. Then it became a good race, former champion Robbie Stillwagon ran down leader JT Ferry for the win. Dallas Schott got Ferry for second. Unfortunately that's where my night ended. It was already 9:40, and they still had 3 consis and 2 features to run. I went home.

Don't know why Grandview runs modified and sportsman when another class is there, it always drags the show out. Weekly 2 division show runs off fast. The main culprit here was the first modified heat. First off, they run 12 lap heats, my opinion no need for more than 8 laps. 9 cars in this heat, and it's possible each car was leading at some point. At least 5-6 yellows.

The main point in my posting is this: somebody's gonna get hurt there, I mean spectators. It's no joke anymore, these boards are older than most of the people sitting on them. There are around 20 steps to get up there, and once up, there is a floor board sagging at couple inches below others, just looking like it's gonna break. I also noticed a nail sticking out of the second step from top, out a good 1 1/2". If someone tripped on it going down, that's a helluva trip down those stairs.

I will return to the track, despite this. I love the racing there, and it's close. It's funny though, I go to Port Royal, Lincoln and BAPS more often than Grandview, each 2 hours away.

Mountain Creek Speedway. Catawba, NC. Participant. Their race director could not be there so I was asked to fill in for the day. This track is SMALL. Well under a quarter mile. No way full sized race cars could compete here. They basically ran two separate shows. Kids classes at 2pm, then micro sprints and some other class around 5pm. The four kids classes were actually more entertaining than I was expecting. Brexton Busch won one of the classes and there was a Samantha Busch sighting. LOL. I don't know the classes but they looked like karts with cages, body work and some had wings. The micro sprints brought 32 cars for $1000 to win. 4 meaningful heats and two meaningful B mains. The other class had 5 cars. They ran 20 cars in the A Main and they were busy out there. Always in traffic! It got a little dusty but it was run in daytime on a very hot sunny day. I think it was $15 to get in. There is no pit pass. $15 for everyone I believe. Not alot of grandstands but it is a very scenic venue tucked away in the woods. You have to drive a good half mile across farmland down a gravel road to get there. They don't run every week as the family in charge runs a farm so they're too busy. Good surface. Excellent catch fence and Whelen safety lights in all 4 corners. They're doing good things here. I'll definitely return in the future!

Before the afternoon features they had a quick intermission. Several of us were on the track talking about what should be done to the track. There was a younger driver out there with us. He had a hat with a 52 on the front. One guy said Ken Schrader. I said it's also Stewart Friesen. He said it was in fact a Friesen hat and he worked for them. I asked if he knew Kevin Eyres. He said he did. I forgot to ask his name but I found it interesting. Always a Wall Stadium/3 Wides connection wherever you go. Haha.

PORT ROYAL Labor Day Classic....well...it was HOT....94* at 1 PM...big traffic issues with an accident on the DETOUR getting to the Fairgrounds...took another HOUR  due to an accident on the detour...$15 addmission..not a big crowd like usual..maybe the heat??  31- 410's...25 wingless sportsman and 28 4 cyl FWD..started with GROUP time trials for 410's and sportsmans.. THEN heats for all classes...at 4pm those were done BUT they were going to do track prep for 15 minutes...well we packed it in and went to see the livestock exhibts...left the grounds at 4:40 and didn't hear a motor but they were announcing the lineup...410 fast lap was 17.8 fast for afternoon racing...but just couldn't muster the energy to see the features...

Went to Shellhammers Raceway.  Car counts were good for size of track.  I believe they had seven divisions.

Show started at 7:00 ended at 9:45.

They need a good p.a.system, could not here who the drivers were.

Racing was entertaining with some passing. Also good concession stand with reasonable prices.

Now in the next year or two a guy will say he met a guy at the track and I will have to remember who it was. Thanks Kev, it's hard enough remembering anything.  LOL  Did he work for the truck team?

Georgetown, pits as crew.   First time to Georgetown after the improvements, WOW, they did a great job. They took down the 37 telephone poles down the front stretch and put up a nice fence, a little higher would be nice, but very safe now. (When you get used to fences like New Egypt and Wall, anything lower feels wierd.)

The surface was good, not great. It got a little rough off the corners, but I really thing that is the result from the left side panhards. Give them a little push because there was a lot of rain the day before. Some dust, but not annoying dust that clouds up, just feels like sand landing on you. Hard to explain.  The forecast was not favorable race day, but they stuck it out and I think it effected the front gate. It was not the usaul crowded Georgetown.

Brett runs a nice show. Fast enough and never have to try to figure out what is going on. The announcers arevery good and they play them in the pits, which is bad because when the woman is calling for heats all you hear is a high pitched blah, blah, blah.

The Modified feature was very entertaining. Lead changes between Stew and Godown were good with Sheppard lurking in third. We saw an old Stewie type win, start 7th, work his way to the front running where they are not, which is usually the top. That's kind of been missing the last two years. Good as a team being in Victory Lane again, it's been awhile. We are called his Mid Atlantic Crew with Rich and Wendy Laubenstein, Tom Belmont, and myself. Stew has missed most of the races in our area this year due to rain or NASCAR stuff, so it was fun!

I think he was racing a micro sprint. Dark haired younger guy. Maybe 20-something. Does the truck team race out of NC?
