Guys go to Youtube and and type in stapleton42 and watch 75 year old Lake Speed return to the track with one of his original Purex Ford 83 cars. A great vidoe to watch.

First Nascar cup race I ever attended was at Darlington which was won by Lake Speed in an Oldsmobile.  According to google Lake's win took place on March 27, 1988.   Scott Ely

The first time I had ever heard of Lake Speed was when he won a consolation race at Daytona during Speedweeks 1981.  The race was made up of those that didn't qualify based on Thursday's Twins, or their qualifying time.  Not everybody who hadn't qualified for the 500 chose to run the consolation, but Lake dominated and I think it was a great opportunity to have the spotlight on him, and who knows... maybe it helped him down the road.

The only down side was that the race was run as a "consi", but it was set up that nobody would actually transfer to the 500, so while Lake didn't run the 500 that year, those who attended on Friday of speedweeks 1981 now had a new driver to keep their eye on for the future.

I'm pretty sure Lake ran the ROC race at Pocono in a modified.
