Great article this week by Ernie Saxton crediting Joe Macfarlan's comments about "tinkering".  Thanks Ernie and good thoughts by Joe  and respecting it enough to print it.  We all know Joe's inspiration is Al Michalchuk, one of the great "tinkerers".  Al has done some stuff for me, so I have been privy to his tinkering and it is amazing the way his mind works.  Nothing is impossible.

The 292 brings back fond memories, my favorite 292 story goes back to the early 70's at the paved Ft Dix speedway. The wrinkled 292 came out with dirt tires and basically did what they call drifting these days before it was a real sport. He3 smoked the tires off that thing almost all the way around the track for about 6 laps. The crowd went bonkers. He ran the snot outta that thing every track he raced at.

My favorite Al story comes 2nd hand from Rick Lewis 21 modified. There were 80-90 sportsman cars back in the day trying to make thefield. Rick said if Al broke in the heat you didn't want to miss that consi, the story was Al smeared grease on his rt.side tires trying not to catch the boards at Flemington.

I witnessed Al do that at P'ville (Atlantic City Speedway) too. Sideways with both rear tires smoking thru the turns.

In case anybody thought the memories were being embellished, here's a video by Al Quellette from that day at Pleasantville:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwoHccie0N0

Fast forward to time stamp 7:55 - 8:25.

Unfortunately, the day didn't end very well:  Check out time stamp 10:59 to 11:32

Al told me that the promoter wanted him to pay for the fence, so he never went back!

Thanks Ernie - Always the professional, Ernie reached out to me a little while back and asked if he could include some of the info from the post about "tinkering" in one of his upcoming columns.  Thank you Ernie for including the info - very much appreciated.

I'd also like to thank Vault Visitor "T-Hem" for starting the thread about the lower car counts that are becoming the norm.  Thanks also to those who added their comments here on the board to T-Hem's original thread.  For those who missed it, scroll down to 8/14 and look for the subject line "Car Counts - Your Top 5 Reasons."

As a follow up, and with Kevin mentioning Al, I went digging through some old scrapbooks and found the following article that is from 1976 (possibly from the Trentonian?) that really fits in well with the discussion about tinkering.....  I see that Don Nugent (dnoldschool34 here on the board) was the credited photographer for the article, so maybe he can provide more info about the article (maybe written by Pat Singer?) other info, etc.,.
