I was watching racing from Sharon speedway on dirt vision saturday night and the announcer said that it was the oldest running speedway in America.  I thought Orange county was the oldest.

From the Sharon Speedway website: https://www.sharonspeedway.com/history/

"Sharon Speedway is one of the oldest, continuously running weekly racetracks in the United States. Rusty Wallace, Tom Sneva, Tony Stewart, Lee Petty Dave Blaney, Kyle Larson, and Christopher Bell are among a long list of drivers who have competed here since Sharon Speedway started operations in 1929."

Orange County began hosting automobile races in 1919. So the announcer was misspoke or was misinformed.

I believe you're right. It comes down to wording. Milwaukee may be the oldest running racetrack. But for PR/Adverstising purposes, putting the word "weekly" before "running" changes the meaning.

Sharon Speedway may be one of the oldest purpose built auto racing tracks in the country. And for the record Sharon Speedway started auto racing in 1931.

I'd give the guy a pass. It sounds good and he has a couple hours to fill. Do you know how many world's fastest half miles are out there? It sounds good and only geeks like us know any better.
