HIRSCHMAN AND SOLOMITO ARE WALL STADIUM TURKEY DERBY MODIFIED WINNERS

WALL, NJ ~ Matt Hirschman of Northampton, Pa. and Timmy Solomito of Center Moriches, NY were the big winners on Friday and Saturday in Modified stock car main events at Wall Stadium Speedway. The 50th edition of the Turkey Derby was presented in the memory of long-time racing supporter Tom Wanick, Jr.

In Saturday's Tour Modified 150-lap race, Hirschman started tenth in the 27 car field and patiently worked his way into the top five by lap 30. Andy Jankowiak led the first half of the event before Andrew Krause and Hirschman moved to the front to battle for the lead. On lap 103 Hirschman, Krause and others ducked into the pit area for a tire change while Jankowiak moved to the lead after an earlier tire change. Jankowiak and Solomito then fought for the lead before Solomito's effort was ruined in a turn four crash.

Jankowiak then paced the field while Krause and Hirschman advanced to second and third. Jankowiak and Krause then wrestled for the win in the closing laps before the duo tangled and spun in the first turn with a handful of laps remaining. That handed the lead and eventual $15,000 win to Hirschman while Stephen Kopcik, Patrick Emerling, Ronnie Williams and Dave Sapienza wrapped up the top five.

In Friday's Wall/SK Modified 100-lapper Kopcik, Solomito, Krause and others were the stars for much of the distance as they battled for the win. In the closing laps they swapped the top spot before Solomito moved the the front and took the $6,000 win. Eddie McCarthy raced to the second place finish, with Hirschman, Carsten DiGiantomasso and Kopcik completing the top five.

In the weekend's support class action, Blake Barney of Jackson won a close victory over Kevin Davison in the Sportsman main event. Jaden Brown, Kenny Reaves and Eric Lane were second through fifth. Bryan O'Shea of Neptune City won the 50 lap race for the Factory Stocks over early leader Shanon Mongeau. Elliot Wohl, Scott Riggleman and Kevin Flores were third, fourth and fifth.

Alex McCollum of China Grove, NC won the 23 car Legend Cars main event over Jacob Burns, Luke LaBrun, Chase Van Houten and Derek Gluchaki. CJ Zukowski grabbed the win over a top five including TJ Graves, Ryan Warren, Dylan Cabral and Joe Warren in the 23 car Fast 4 feature race.

Second generation racer Gerard Giordano of Freeport, NY won his first ever Turkey Derby event in the Limited Late Model 50-lap race. Ethan Brown, Richie Davidowitz, Brian Doyle and Mark Hudson were second through fifth. Dillon Steuer was a dominating winner in the 50 lap race for Dirt Modifieds. Cody Kessler, Billy Pauch, Jr., Roger LeBreche and Mike Baldwin were second through fifth.

Ryan Tidman was the top man in the 30-lap race for the Three Quarter Midgets. Joey Baily, Buddy Sload, Tyler Wagner and Matt Janish were second through fifth.

When following a race on race monitor, how can be so different than actual results. Aren't all results electronically recorded.

Attended as as spectator on Sat, very reasonable $27 adm for seniors. Sat next to my friend Steve and met and talked with former driver Jimmy Broderick from CT in the stands!

Plus's: festive atmosphere, good variety and priced concessions. Many activities for the kids. Parking was more organized too, only 1 announcement all day to move a car.

Minus's: Show dragged out - way too much downtime. One of the loudspeakers in turn 1 was down. Bathrooms had to close due to frozen pipes? With the cold temps they could have timed warm ups to set the line ups. Mods should have been on the track for their feature by 130 or 2 at the latest. Several controversial calls too. Seems like they made the rules up as they went along. Final event, Dirt Mods ended at approx 715pm ish in 30 degree temp.

Give it an A-. Cannot complain too much, glad Diane is keeping it alive. I've witnessed prob 45 of the 50 Derby's and I have attended at least 1 show per year at Wall since 1960 inclusive so the place is dear to my heart.

Nice recap Jeff, I would tweak one small section...instead of the duo tangled in closing laps I think most would say Krause dumped the leader Jankowiak who dominated a large portion of the race ruining his night with a good old fashion Nascrap style drive through him instead of around him.  Uncharacteristic of Krause, but that sucked to see his night ended with that lame move.  As far as the Race monitor being incorrect I'm not sure but it is rarely correct in the finish results and even drivers in a division???

On another, note Danny Bohn announced he will not be returning to Wall because of the Black Flag.

Not to stir up a hornet's nest, BUT I heard that Danny Bohn was leading at the time he was black flagged for rough driving.  I was not a Wall for the tour race but am having a hard time comprehending that this happened.  Maybe a 3Wider who wwas there could shed some light on the subject.  Scott Ely

P.S. Thought it was funny that Grandview fans were asking if the Derby races were the norm for Wall.

It looked to me like Bohn "chopped" him. It is the type of call they make at the Quarter Midget tracks. The passer was all the way alongside of the passee and got cut off by the car on the outside (Bohn).I do not ever recall it being enforced in big car racing let alone having the driver being DQ'ed for it.

Kev the guys sitting in front of us where big dirt fans from Grandview area, they were asking us if it's normal for everybody to wreck each other so much!!  I think that Krause and Big Money would have been able to get around Jankowiak bc they were clearly a bit faster w/ 10 to go but put a clean move on the guy!  Krause was running into him for 3 laps in a row before he dumped him!  I wasn't there Fri, if anybody has video of the incident between him and Big Money post if for us to see.  Thanks hope everybody had a great Turkey weekend!

Stanton357. The guys from Grandview have a lot of nerve complaining about wrecks. Every time I ever go there for a regular Saturday show it is a crash fest.

It was interesting to see how quickly the officials responded to aggressive driving both days EXCEPT when concerning Andrew Krause. He blatently took out Hirschman on Friday and no action was taken. I viewed what happened with him and Jankowiak as more of a racing incident, seeing that Jankowiak's tires were 25 laps older that Krouse's, but nonetheless, I was glad to see that karma came back around!

That guy in the 76 that won drives just like the owner. The leader gave him a mile on the bottom in 3&4 and the 76 still managed to clean him out!
