Msg ID: 2805360 Harder on engines, EWS or Flemington?

Just a random question that popped in my head recently. I'm guessing Windsor due to the long straights, but Flemington was a weird joint so maybe it was an engine eater upper. Someone here has an opinion.

Neither really but if you had to pick one it was probably EWS. Flemington was more of a momentum track that the RPM didn't really change drastically. You ran a fairly high (low number) gear at Flemington as compared to a lot of other tracks with an RPM not much past 7000 in the injector days. A certain well known racers dad used to say (and I know this is way not po1itically correct) you run your engine at Flemington like you like your women...rich and retarded! Hey, I didn't say it!

Not gonna lie, I laughed at that. Now was 7000 a large number in those days? I think my little Focus red lines at 6500

7k was about average. Nazareth and Middletown were probably a bit higher. Later on when they started with more cylinder head and manifold porting the RPM went higher.

To add more to the discussion, for you guys directly involved under the hood, what did a small block turn back in the 70's versus what they turn now?

Same question for big blocks.

It really depends on your engine combination stroke- bore - cam ect. I know when I ran in the mid eighties at flemington I liked around 7600 rpm and at Windsor around 8200 - although I only ran Windsor a couple times.

EWS for sure. As others have said Flemington was a momentum track. Fast story, in 1978 we won the TRi Track race at Flemington with Billy O driving. Something happened to the motor at about lap 50. I don't remember what was wrong but that baby was sick. Trust me the pace car had more horse power then 73 for those final laps. Didn't matter still won by nice margin. To take it farther (because the actual question was which track is harder) a motor that runs on consistant RPM's is happier then one that has to shut down in the corners and reach peak at the end of straghts twice a lap.
