I recently watched the YouTube Stapleton 42 video with Gary Balough and he told a story about reading when he was put into the wall by someone when he was driving for statewide. He said that the pace car picked up the field, he drove back towards the pack and hit the other guys right front with his right front. Now here are the questions, 1 Is this true? 2 who was the other driver? 3 was this when statewide released him?

Hard to believe someone put Balough in the wall. It was usually the other way around. But hey I'm still a little salty about him pluggin Ploski into the 4th turn wall at Flemington. LOL!

Don't recall ever hearing that. And from what I understand he opted to leave Statewide.

Paintman you are right! Ploski was on the move in the 47 (filling in for Grbac) and it looked like a intentional "stuff".

The driver he had the run in at Reading was most likely Gerald Chamberlain. Gary has told that story a few times. I've evan seen a picture of Gerald leaning in the window and giving Gary his side of the story. For the record Gary left the 3 team on his own. Didn't get fired. As far as the Flemington race Stan was leading and Gary ran him down. When he made his move under Stan in turn four Stan did end up in the marbles and then the wall. After the race Stan said that there was no contact between them to put him in the wall. Years later however Stan, I believe changed it to Gary put him in the wall. I'm not saying which is right or wrong. Just the facts.

Thanks Anthony. I was there and always sat in the stands heading into the 1st turn. I can't remember if it was in a heat race or in the 100 lapper which I believe was Memorial Day weekend. I just remember from where I was sitting it looked like he was crowded into the boards. This was probably the first time they had raced each other since the October 200 that Ploski put on a clinic in the Chesson 76. Was this the same Ege 9 car that Balough ran in the 200 in the fall that he was running this day? Thanks, Rich

Yes Rich that was the original #9. It was in the 100 lapper. I'm thinking the last half of the race. Stan did run out of room coming out of four. Best part is we are still talking about it 50 years later!

Thanks for the first hand report Anthony.

Question:  Any idea what happened to the "Lilac #9" that became the first #73 that Gary drove?  Wondering if it was sold off, or parted out.  It was definitely a favorite.

The incident between Gerald and Gary took place at East Windsor in 1976
