The early to mid 70's was a very interesting time for us short track fans when it came to watching the the change over from a majority of coupe and sedan bodies to the newer style bodies (Gremlin, Pinto, Mustang, Falcon, Vega, etc.,.)  For many it was a sad time, as for a lot of folks out there, the coupes and sedans will always be their favorites.  For others, seeing the older body styles replaced with more modern bodies from mid/late 60's and early 70's production cars were welcomed as it created a whole new look for the modified and sportsman cars of the day.  (I don't choose one over the other...  I liked the coupes and sedans, but I also liked many of the new body styles.... but once the 80's hit, and sheet metal replaced real bodies, for me, the best days were over.... but that's a discussion for another time....)

It seemed almost always that when a racing team made the change from campaigning a car with a coupe or sedan body, to a newer Gremlin or Falcon, etc., they never went back to campaigning a coupe or sedan again.  The same can be said about quite a few drivers too..., that once they stepped away from the seat of a coupe or sedan, and found themself behind the wheel of a newer body styled racer, they never went back to a ride in a coupe of sedan...

So, this weekend's "You can't go back... or can you???" trivia question is:  Can you name a racing team, or a driver that made the move to a newer body style car (Gremlin, Pinto, Mustang, etc.,), but then "went back" to a coupe or a sedan AFTER the newer style bodied car?

Let us know:

  • Coupe or Sedan Car #, Team or Driver:__________________
  • What newer style body car and # they drove:_________
  • What coupe or sedan # they drove AFTER:__________

Give this one some thought as I know there are a few examples out there, and I'm thinking you guys, as always, will come up with a few more!

Remember:  Let us know who drove/campaigned a coupe or sedan... then drove/campaigned a new body style car (Gremlin, Pinto, Mustang, etc.)... and then went back to driving, or campaigning a coupe or a sedan!

Have fun with this one.... and thanks you in advance for any responses received.

Chic put together a new hot rod (in 1977?) based on a Tobias chassis and a Vega body that he got from Tilghman's Used Auto Parts on Rt. 68, Jobstown.  The car got destroyed near the end of the season at Windsor.  Over the following winter, Chic repaired the Tobias and hung a '37 Ford coupe body that he had from the Tobias/ Vega's predecessor.  The history of the Vega, its demise, and rebirth as a Ford coupe is detail in 3Wide's 70 section, page 154.

I knew Sammy would appear here, and I cheated a bit by checking the "Sammy Beavers" section of the main site, so here goes...

Several different coupes early in his career, followed by the Horton 43 Gremlin, back to the Scaramadella 121 sedan, then Horton 43 Mustang, Norcia 81 coupe, followed by all modern bodies.

Tony Hirschman's #60 Valiant bodied car that he raced at Dorney later was rebodied with a coupe body and raved by a couple of drivers, including Roger Heffelfinger.  The car is currently being restored back to its original Valiant tin.
